West Virginia Clean Up organization announced plans to remove unoccupied shacks and outbuildings along public roads in the state. The effort targets derelict structures to improve appearance and safety on WV road corridors.
Vatican sources say Pope John XXIII is still very ill after a second internal bleeding incident within a week. While some officials noted brief signs of improvement, others say he remains weak though lucid. His personal physician offered no firm assessment, citing uncertainty.

The Turnpike Commission will decide on permitting a 100 unit motel near the Beckley interchange only after the Federal Bureau of Roads issues guidance. Beckley and Princeton motel owners protested, stating they were heard at an 11 a.m. meeting and invited to return after the federal reply. Local motel leaders and attorneys attended, including M. W. McCollum and Joie Sheffield.
Washington reports the House Ways and Means Committee approved taxing group-term life insurance as employee income for high earners next year. About 500,000 of 40 million workers would be affected. the first 30,000 in coverage stays exempt. The plan, part of Kennedy tax reform, would raise about 16 million annually in new taxes, with exemptions and age-based cost factors shaping individual liability.
Two American climbers William Unsoeld and Barry Bishop reached a Kathmandu hospital after a rescue helicopter carried frostbitten toes from 13 000 feet on Everest. Luther Jerstad, also frostbitten, was reported in stable condition.
Representatives from West Virginia will compare Interstate 79 notes with Pennsylvania delegates at a Greenville meeting Tuesday evening. Three WV officials will report on progress on the four-lane North South expressway during the Erie Pittsburgh West Virginia Freeway Association annual dinner. WV delegation includes Charles A. Montgomery Norman Laughlin and James Furbee.

A fog shrouded New Jersey Turnpike crash involving 14 trucks and 3 autos left at least six truck drivers dead and 10 injured, with the scene between interchanges 13 and 14 near Newark Airport. Wreckage included potatoes, produce, steel, and frozen fish. Drivers described zero visibility as the fog collapsed from the sky.
Raleigh County American Legion Post 32 invites the State Department to hold its convention in Beckley this year. Commander R. Francis Parker says lodging will be non discriminatory at the Beckley Hotel. State Commander Chester Matney reviews Beckley Charleston or Wheeling as site. decision due this afternoon amid Bluefield postings’ withdrawal over accommodations for Negro legionnaires.
Shirley Booth and E. G. Marshall, both Broadway veterans, won the 1962-63 Emmy Awards for best actress and best actor in regular series. Booth earned her prize for Hazel and Marshall for The Defenders, marking a second straight win for each. Kim Stanley won best single performance for Ben Casey. Trevor Howard received best single actor for The Invincible Mr Disraeli.
Atty Gen Robert F Kennedy urged about 40 theater owners in the South to desegregate their movie houses. John H Stembler head of Theater Owners of America said the President's brother invited a representative group from Southern states to hear the department views on racial restrictions.
President Kennedy returned to the White House from Camp David in Maryland after a weekend in the mountains. He arrived in Washington at 10 11 a.m. by helicopter as fog delayed his departure. Mrs Kennedy remained at Camp David.
Ray J. Burmeister 73 of Raleigh died Sunday in Huntington hospital after a long illness. Funeral services set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Keyser-Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Walter Griswold officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Park. Born January 19 1890 in Ashland Pennsylvania he was a coal mining engineer and executive, last serving as president of the Raleigh Coal and Coke Co. before retiring in 1953.
The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Memphis must promptly desegregate parks libraries and museums. Justice Goldberg stated there is no compelling reason to delay. prior approvals of gradual plans were rejected as unconstitutional.
In Jackson Mississippi city officials scheduled a grievance session with Negro leaders at 4 p.m. EDT to gauge potential massive racial demonstrations. Medgar Evers NAACP urged a mass meeting Tuesday night to hear the grievance session report as Mayor Thompson urged segregation. separate ministerial talks began but not endorsed by the city. Greensboro NC also saw talks as demonstrators prepared for action if desegregation proposals falter. North Carolina Gov Sanford urged tolerance while Negro groups in Clarksdale sought audience over racial issues. See Racial Page 2.
