Mrs Dorothy Christian Morris a vocational home economics teacher at Mount Hope High School has been selected as Teacher of The Year by the Fayce Chapter of West Virginia State Alumni She is noted for organizing adult classes in vocational home economics and for pioneering as the first Negro vocational home economics teacher in West Virginia Her career includes leadership with Future Homemakers of America and involvement in the school integration program in Fayette County.

Armco Community Award Named William Mosley Winner
William David Mosley of Madison has been named winner of the 1957 Armco Community Scholarship for four years at $650 annually. He is a Scott High School senior planning to study civil engineering at West Virginia University this fall. Mosley participates in National Honor Society Student Council Varsity Football Allied Youth Organization and N.Y.F. and enjoys archery and construction. The Armco Foundation funds the scholarships for Armco plant communities with selection based on academics extracurriculars recommendations and interviews.

Oceana Rotary Hears Plans for Playground Upgrades
At a Thursday luncheon the Oceana Rotary Club discussed the Laurel Park playground. President Hugh Miller said tennis court work would begin soon after the Tower Construction Co finishes other contracts. The Oceana Woman's Club will add fences and other improvements after court completion. Miles Crowder, a new local druggist, attended as a guest.

Miller's Rites Conducted Today
Funeral services for Frank Miller were set for 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Methodist Church with Dr. C. G. Eastwood officiating. Burial followed in Highlawn Memorial Park. Miller, 19, died instantly when his car plunged 225 feet into Bluestone Lake near Hinton after midnight Friday. The body was taken to his parents’ home and then to the church for the service. Pallbearers were Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity members from Concord College in Athens.

Last Rites Set For Miss Ruby Brown
Miss Ruby Brown 47 of Colcord will have funeral services Tuesday afternoon at Birchton Community Church conducted by Rev. John Henson. Burial follows at Mid-Ferrell Cemetery in Twilight. Survivors include her parents Willard and wife of Colcord, brother Charles C. Brown of Pettus, sister Opal Stanley of Ohley, two half brothers James Brown of Medway Ohio and Lloyd at home, and half sister Arlene Jenkins of Pettus. Body remains at Valley Herald Home Whitesville and will be moved to the church an hour before services.

Death of Pineville elder Dell Cooke after hip injury
Dell Cooke, long time Pineville resident and former town policeman, died at 3 a.m. Sunday at Stevens Clinic Welch after a hip fracture and ensuing blood clot. Born 1867 in Oceana, he leaves four sons, a daughter, a brother, a sister, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pineville Methodist Church with burial in the family cemetery at Oceana.

Mount Hope Garden Club sent three representatives to the Glen Jean Garden Club at the May Civil Defense meeting in Beckley. At the June gathering in Mount Hope, Mrs. Ralph Bailey hosted with a program by Mrs. W R Park and Mrs. Fred Potter showing United States bird color slides. The group plans to decorate city lamp posts for Christmas and may form a local mental health chapter.

Drawing set found tied to Central High student
Central High student Bill Labkoff returned a mechanical drawing case found at school. Secretary Anita Tobias noted the owner’s name. Bill said it belonged to his father L Labkoff who recalled losing the set in September 1925 while a student at Central. The school has moved since then but the case remained with the building.

Wyoming County Democrats plan a June 4 dinner at the Cow Shed branded Democratic Party Night to raise funds for upcoming elections. County party leader Mack Arnold says the event will host nationally known Democrats answering questions and aims to become an annual affair. Also noted: four seeded teams were eliminated in the 1949 National Invitational Basketball Tournament quarterfinals.

World Council of Churches Meet in New Haven Sets Merger Talk
The first U S top level WCC meeting in the country since 1954 will be held in New Haven from July 30 to August 7. Discussions will cover a possible merger with its sister body the International Missionary Council. The WCC includes 165 Protestant Anglican and Orthodox churches across 30 nations. The last assembly was in 1954 at Evanston Illinois.
