14 000 Widows To Lose Benefits

The Veterans Administration warns about 24 000 widows of veterans who died from service connected causes before 1937 may lose access to higher death compensation unless they apply by July 1, 1937. About 80 000 widows have already applied for the higher payments, with roughly 101 000 of the 114 000 widows eligible earlier. Applications after July 1 will grant retroactive pay from January 1 under the Survivor Benefits Act, while those who do not apply keep the old benefit amounts.
