Mrs Evelyn J Smithson of Alderson becomes the new superintendent of the state prison for women at Peace Springs Summers County, after Gov Underwood confirmed the resignation of Mrs Mabel Turley Sims. Smithson, Greenbrier County native, has prior service at Alderson federal reformatory and taught in Alderson before running an antique hobby shop.
Clemens died Sunday at home after a brief illness. He owned the Gauley Theater and was a World War II veteran. Born October 19, 1922 in Lorado, he leaves wife Margaret Gunoe Clemens, daughter Becky Jo, mother Roda Mae Clemens, two brothers and a sister. Funeral services held today at Gauley Bridge Methodist with burial in High Lawn Memorial Park. A Fayette Circuit Court docket for July term to be set Thursday at 9:30 a.m. by Judge Charles Lyneral. counsel present.
Mullens woman Mrs. Irma McDonald died in a Detroit hospital from injuries sustained in a car wreck three weeks earlier while returning from a northern visit. The accident occurred near Mullens en route home.
Avanee Mullens infant son of Mr and Mrs Jal Mullens of Raven were to be buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Mullens after death at birth. The child died 12:45 a.m. Monday at Mullens Hospital. The mother Mrs Jessie Mead Mullens was hospitalized in Detroit and returned home after a relapse. Surviving relatives include six brothers and three sisters.
Pineville notices list several moves and visits. Walter Byrd and family attended a serious illness in Princeton. Mrs. Caffee remained with her mother. Sally Shipman’s graduation prompted trips to Parkersburg. Rev. Sam Harford conducted a funeral in Pineville. Family visitors came from Buckhannon Huntington and Charleston.
Oak Hill Pythian Temple Sisters No. 100 plans Monday to initiate Georgia Balding of Park Street at the June 10 meeting. Refreshment committee includes Kathryn Legg Wallace Evans and Harry Price. Mrs W T Price presided as Mrs Bill Kincaid, absent due to illness at Oak Hill Hospital.
Princeton police hold Christine Franklin and Jesse Hughes after the fatal stabbing of Roscoe Swim 30. Swim was killed at Island Creek Sunday night. A bread knife was found about 50 feet from the body. A lab report due Wednesday is awaited. Swim set his car on fire after damaging the gas tank. Survivors include his mother and wife plus two children.
A singing convention will be held June 1 in the Church of God at Dorothy announced by Rev. John Smathwood. All area quartets and singing groups invited to participate. The related vacation Bible school runs June 10 for 10 days with Rev. Smathwood directing and Pauline Griffith at the piano, assisted by Thelma Arthur Tony Wingo Don Meadows Ace Farley and Mabel Stover.
State Tax Commissioner J Field replies to Ralph Hottle on Whitesville gross sales tax. The council’s levy prompted debate as candidates from Labor and Progressive Citizens parties campaign in the June 4 election. Attendees at Arthur Williams funeral include Gadd, Wolven, and Virginia Gadd.
Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Mildred Banks will be held at 1 30 pm Thursday at John Wesley Methodist Church in Montgomery. Rev A L Witten to officiate with burial in Carter Woodson Cemetery. Survivors include her husband A L Banks daughter Mrs William Tipton of Knoxville Tennessee sisters M E Davis H M McCollum C L Britt brother Leon C James and three grandchildren. The body remains at Watson and Coleman Funeral Home until one hour before service.
Boone County requires all vehicles be registered with County Assessor Dewey Miller by June 11 to comply with a new state law. 1998 license tags will not be issued without payment of personal property tax. Field representatives in Sherman, Prenter, Racine, Peytona, Ashford, Turtle Creek, Bald Knob, Gor don, and Madison offices assist residents.
