Students abandon Ghent center amid harassment claims
Seven students and two instructors from the Appalachian Center for Ghent in West Virginia left the 200 acre Farm near Ghent after reports of hostile local residents and threats of violence. They planned relocation to Berea Kentucky or nearby and described a project to learn through experience with crafts farming and nature study. Residents gathered for a Ghent meeting and questioned the school’s purpose while a student paper recalled the exit as a learning process and referenced tensions with urban life in Philadelphia.
