Assessment Suit Hearing Delayed in Monongalia Case
The West Virginia Supreme Court postponed a hearing until June 8 on whether State Tax Commissioner G Thomas Battle should be directed to penalize the Monongalia County court by 4551 dollars. The delay came at the request of both sides’ attorneys. The Action for Better Schools Committee argues the county court failed to keep assessments at required levels, keeping Class II evaluations at 45.6 percent of actual value against a 47 percent standard, costing the county $4,551 in tax revenue. The committee claims both the county court and the county assessor ignored the law, while the school board and Battle indicated they did not intend to press the matter.
