President Johnson endorses broader unemployment benefits and higher employer taxes while avoiding a stance on raising the $1.25 minimum wage. He warns Congress to study effects on workers, costs, and prices and opposesHours cuts, keeping the 40 hour workweek intact, and he backs repealing Taft-Hartley section 14B.
The president proposes repealing section 14B to remove the union shop ban and standardize national labor policy. He notes right to work laws exist in 18 states and argues repeal would reduce conflicts across states. Repeal would affect 31 states where union shop is allowed under current federal law.
Thirty US bombers from the USS Coral Sea resumed air attacks on North Viet Nam after a five day lull targeting a petrol eum depot at Phu Qui 125 miles south of Hanoi. The depot burned after 25 tons of bombs rockets and bullpup missiles. A Vietnamese broadcast claimed waves of US planes bombed and strafed Communist territory. One F105 was shot down over Nghe an province. The next steps may involve attacks on economic targets to pressure Hanoi. Six battalions of South Vietnamese troops launched pincers near a Communist base on the border. In Long hamlet Bi an Province 100 miles east of Saigon, a daylight raid overran the garrison, killing one militiaman and wounding another.

West Virginia Secretary of State appointee Robert D. Bailey said Gov. Hulett Smith asked him Friday night about taking the post. Bailey, who would likely run in 1966, said he had promised to help the governor and would consider a bid. He noted no staff changes and succeeds the late Joe F. Burdett.
Governor Hulett C. Smith accepted a Rose Garden project in Charleston as part of the Lets Beautify America program. A 25-plant Cape Coral rose bed will be planted in the State Capitol circle off Washington Street. Mrs. C Manning Smith presented a plaque dedicating the garden to the people of West Virginia.
TONYPANDY Wales police described the coal mine blast 800 feet below as hell like. Thirty one miners died Monday and 13 survived with some severely injured. William Whitehead blamed lax safety standards while investigators hunted the blast’s cause amid a grim rescue effort.
A head on crash near Lookout on U. S. 60 at a hill crest left Mrs. Bertha McMillian 59 of Fairdale dead. Aldon McMillian her husband and Dana Bird of Crab Orchard were hospitalized in fair or poor condition. State Police reported both cars near the highway center when they collided.

West Virginia officials tout tax cuts, and Gov Hulett Smith outlines a 120 day report to the people. An alleged Israeli spy is executed in Damascus, and various regional regulatory and legal actions are noted across the United States.
Police linked Capuchin friars at a Roman Albano monastery to a vast contraband cigarette operation. Two of six friars were incriminated, one suspect arrested in Lugano, and a Swiss link traced to shipments labeled farm machinery bound for Tel Aviv. President Johnson announced the first $62.3 million in grants for Project Headstart as part of his poverty program. The initiative aims to fund 1,658 projects, creating 9,157 centers serving 352,537 children with 41,000 professionals and $16 million in local contributions, targeting underprivileged pre schoolers.
White House announced 1 658 Head Start projects across 52 counties and towns. In West Virginia Raleigh County will receive 1 001 children and 27 centers costing 191 558 dollars. Other counties list numbers of children centers and totals for the program.
In northern Santo Domingo rival factions clash as both sides claim control complicating U S efforts for a negotiated settlement. Junta forces report progress in the Ciudad Nueva area while rebels claim the advance is stalled amid resistance. Casualties include at least 11 junta troops and an American paratrooper killed.
Mike Metz a Pineville High School junior won the 1965 Journal ist of the Year award from the Raleigh Wyoming Scholastic Press Association. He is the first underclassman to receive the honor since 1960. Metz 16 received the plaque from Don Meadows The Register city editor at Mullens High School banquet. He ranks in the upper third of the 125 member junior class and is praised as brilliant and versatile by adviser Mrs Linda Messenger. Metz attended Know Your State Government Day Ohio University journalism workshop earned letters on football team and took part in the county forensics meet. He is a member of the Annual Staff varsity club Minuteman Club.
Fred Aaron a 75 year old deputy resigns from the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office effective June 1 after submitting his resignation to Sheriff Okey A Mills amid a family illness. Aaron, the night jailer, was recently overpowered by inmates allowing a jail break later halted. Mills blamed gross negligence. Aaron had served 16 years and was commended in 1962 for thwarting a prior escape attempt.
Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home said it answered a call at Cool Ridge where a man reportedly died by self inflicted gunshot. Details were not learned at press time.
