The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation of Pittsburgh donates 1000 to West Virginia Tech for four or more Benedum scholarships for entering freshmen from West Virginia high schools. The awards, available for fall, aim to help students who must work to pay college costs and start year with a firm base.
Eight year old Jimmie Rose of Pineville lost his right arm and leg when a Virginian Railway coal train dragged him on a trestle near Pinnacle Creek. The boy was overtaken by rain and apparently attempting to outrun the coal drag. engineer Tom Lark said he did not see the child.
Whitesville RNS reports Prenter Elementary School PTA installed new officers at a Tuesday night meeting led by Violet Snodgrass regional director of the Council of PTAs. Sixty three PTA members and three guests dined at the Prenter Presbyterian Church basement before the ceremony. Officers installed were Sybil Brown president Keith Keeney vice president Maisie Minotti secretary and Ray Cummings treasurer. Two delegates were chosen to attend Leadership Training at Camp Caesar Webster County on June 19. delegates are Cummings and Keeney.
Funeral services for Mrs. Zelta Pearl Craddock 41 will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home Charel Mount Hope by Rev. Ray Tyree. Burial in Sunset Memorial Park Beckley. Survivors include husband Theodore J Craddock father Edmond Powers Willis Branch sister Larabell Smith Sedro Route 1 and others. Body remains at the funeral home for viewing after 5 p.m. today. Born May 29 1935 in one.
The Southern Soil Conservation District will sponsor two area high school students for the conservation camp at Camp Caesar June 10-13. Lewis Holley of Lively Fayette County and Elmer Woods of Buck Summers County were selected by the district board. The group also approved buying a second ter racer blade for tractors used in grading and ditching. Carol Green of Charleston attended as guest and executive secretary of the state committee.
Oak Hill Garden Club approves new member Mrs. For rest P. Smith at Monday meeting with 25 members present. Hostesses were Mrs. C. D. James and Mrs. John Kincaid. Discussion covered Greenbrier convention program and Beckley civil defense meeting. Horticulture displays were shown by J. E. Lewis and Mrs. Bittinger. Members urged to join spring flower show May 18-19 at Fayetteville Memorial Building.

Patricia Carole Kennedy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kennedy of Glen Jean, has been presented the American Legion School Award for honor, courage, scholarship, leadership, and service. The eighth grade Glen Jean Elementary pupil was chosen for her role in preserving the government and advancing society.
Louise Blake operates a six car, 24 hour taxi service in Oak Will from Oak Ave and Blake St. The widow of Bud Blake she runs the business with ten years in the field and three years as owner. Her drivers include Russell Rose Raymond Scott Don Allen Clarence Blake J P Lee and Don Powell. She lives at 103 Blake St with her mother Rose Pool.
Fayette Chapter of the Marshall College Alumni Association will form this weekend. The organizational meeting is now set for 8 p.m. Saturday in the Fayetteville Memorial Building dining room with Dr. Stewart Senith of Marshall College as the main speaker. Frederick A. Fitch Jr. attends as president of the College Alumni Association. Pre organizational committee members include Mrs J E Lewis Mrs C R Hill Miss Nita Kincaid Miss Carolyn Sasser Hal Morrison both of Oak Hill and Water Caldwell Holly Kessler of Fayetteville. The Class of 1919, represented by Mrs Hill, is organizing chapters statewide.
Mount Hove High School announces Charles Puckett elected president of the Band Organization succeeding Ronny Hurd after the season finale meeting. The Band Boosters Club held its Spring banquet with 7 band members and 13 guests present. Attendees included Ben Vickers band director and school officials. New officers elected: Troy Kidd president, Mrs. W M Pennington vice president, Mrs. Hubert Garvin secretary, and Mrs. Troy Kidd treasurer.
H. L. Van Camp commander of Oak Hill Post No 59 American Legion and former Glen Jean school principal spoke at a fall enrollment presentation for Mount Hope High School. The event highlighted the upcoming school year and anticipated student enrollment changes.
Whitesville Women of the Moose announce officer nominations for May 22 and a June election. They plan to aid the Cancer Loan Cabinet with rolling bandages and supplies, joining seven county groups. monthly headquarters deliveries and two work nights weekly support the Madison based cabinet. Members aim to recruit one new member by June as a buffet dinner for Kanawha Valley Legion Moose members closes the week.
Four pledges of Beta Theta Chapter Beta Sigma Phi Sorority will receive ritual of jewels pins at the May 28 meeting, in the home of Mrs R R Thomas Jr co hosted by Mrs John Duda. Members present included Mrs Gene Carter Mrs Fred Russell Miss Rosemary Hall and Mrs Charles Wiseman.
John Henry McCormick 63 of Newport Delaware died in Wilmington Delaware hospital at 6 03 am Wednesday after two years illness. A former Whipple Fayette County miner and Sharon Methodist member he is survived by his wife five sisters one son five daughters and eight grandchildren Funeral services are planned for 3 30 pm Friday at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel with Rev C H Miller officiating and burial in Hill top Cemetery.
Fr ineral services for Wallace Blevins 44 of Glen Jean will be at 2 pm Friday in the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel Oak Hill conducted by Rev B L Moss of Kincaid. Burial will be in Hi Tos Cemetery. Blevins died at Oak Hill Hospital at 10 30 am Tuesday after a long illness.

Whitesville teacher Mrs. Charlotte Peters has been awarded a Marshall College scholarship for summer studies in Economic Education. Professor Edwin Cubby announced the awards honor outstanding social science teachers active in current economic education. The sixth Marshall College workshop runs June 3 to 22 in Huntington.
Fayette County Girl Scouts will take part in the Fayette County Garden Council spring flower show on May 18 19 in Fayetteville. Classes cover doll trays white and red flower arrangements and a Scout luncheon table with specific age groups and consultants listed. Entries by mail to May 10 or by phone to May 13. Kopperston announces the engagement of Edra Sue Tyree to Walter Joseph Pankiewicz of Chicago. Edra Sue, a Oceana High School graduate, studied modeling and works for Nikeh Tube Co. in Chicago. Pankiewicz, a Chicago City Police Department graduate of Chicago Vocational School, is employed by the police department. Wedding plans are incomplete.
The Toneda Mission Society met at the church with Mrs. Tom Fleenor presiding. Devotions by Mrs. Wirt Cook and a Bicte study on Hebrews were presented. The business session reviewed a Women's rally at North Fork and discussed church repairs. Attendees included numerous local members and visitors.
Last rites for William Ludwell Lee Jr. 139 Fayetteville were held at his mother's home with Rev. Father Don lald B Duncan presiding. Burial followed at Huse Memorial Park. Lee died at Oak Hill Hospital after a long illness. He was born September 19 1917 in Fayetteville and attended Kentucky Military Institute and the University of Virginia before WWII service. Survivors include his mother Mrs Ann Hawkins Lee and brother John E. of Fayetteville. The body remained at Thomas Funeral Home in Oak Hill before services.
Mullens resident and former grade school teacher Mrs Parker Strong died suddenly at her Bluefield home in her 60s. Survived by daughters Mary Kelly and Frances. Funeral Friday at Trinity Methodist Church in Bluefield with burial in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg Virginia.
