Bally fer and daughter Sue Whipple Lilly Snuf fer Oak Hill visited Sunday with Mrs Sally Hosband now a patient at Jeffersonville Convalescent Hospital in Tazwell Virginia.
Denys Puckett became president of Mount Hope High School Band at a band room meeting. New officers include Harold Lovelace as vice president Barbara preved as secretary and Jackie Hurd as sergeant at arms. The band earned superior ratings at county Fayetteville and state Bluefield festivals, with new uniforms and improving work noted by director Ben Vickers.
Glen Rogers High School juniors hosted the annual Junior-Senior Banquet in Pineville with the theme Fantasy in Fairyland. Miss Mary Frances Davis and Mrs. Virginia Smith led sponsors. Pearl Phillips was named Pixie Queen. Special guests included Mrs. James Lewis and Mrs. Robert McClain.
A Wyoming County grand jury indicted 47 year old William C. Vaughn known as Hot Lips on a murder charge connected to the death of Carl Haigler. Haigler was found dead in a room below Vaughn’s Mullens restaurant. An autopsy showed a fractured skull. Vaughn said Haigler suffered a stroke and they moved him downstairs. The incident occurred after a period of previous wartime liquor seizures and a separate note of maritime history in the text.
Hymn to the Blessed Virgin opened the May procession at St. Peter and Paul’s Church Scarbro. Miss Barbara Grayh crowned Linda Kullman as May Queen with Dolly Kopinski Patricia Bow and Carol Jens Taylor as court members in pastel gowns. Rev Patrick McSweeney Kanawha City led the service followed by benediction by Rev Fr Paul Helsey Beckley and Rev Fr Eugene Klug.
Mercer County men Donald Ray Bailey 20 and Marvin Underwood 21 died in a late night head on crash between a motorcycle and a pickup near Underwood’s Bluefield area. The pickup driver Thomas D. Jarrett Jr 19 was jailed on a manslaughter charge.
Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority lays out a year of social events from September to June next year. Miss Nancy Tennant, social chairman, and Miss Barbara Allen, program chair, announced activities including cook-outs, a story book gathering, Christmas party, sleigh ride, Yellow Rose ball, Topsy-elley, Founders Day, Mother’s Day celebration, swimming party and picnic. Mrs. Bonnie Smith spoke on telephone use. Miss Margaret Harmond received a Minnesota plate for selling many doughnuts. 14 members played games, with Mrs. R. L. Thomas hosting a hamburger fry scheduled for June 6.
Arthur McClain, co valedictorian of the 8 member Oceana High School graduating class, won a West Virginia University achievement scholarship. A son of Mr and Mrs Monroe McClain Kopperston he was one of two winners and ten alternates chosen for scholastic attainment character and citizenship. He plans to enroll in engineering at the university in September.
In Black Eagle, Montana, eight days of rock falls from a coal mine hillside terrify residents. Noonkester Murphy contracting, hired to auger coal, reported keeping rocks buried or rolled into trenches as work continues. A 430 to 300 pound boulder damaged a home porch and wounded a child, with neighbors filing complaints and the firm promising damages.
The Pineville Woman's Club observed its 7th anniversary with a dinner dance at the Cow Shed. Willian McNemar served as toastmaster, Mrs. Orvitte-Wilks welcomed guests, and a humorous skit titled Reminiscienses was performed. Charter members were recognized. 16 presidents have led the club since its 1937 founding.
