Murder Charge Placed Against Matoaka Officer

Everett Whitt a Matoaka policeman has been charged with murder in the deaths of Jerry Mills 38 and Billy Ray Cordell 21 after a street fight in Matoaka Mercer County State Police confirm a warrant was issued against Whitt Chief Larl Rose avoided charges Whitt suffered injuries in the fracas Cordell and Mills died from gunshot and chest wounds near the Matoaka post office during the incident

Sherman High Sets Orientation Day for Next Year Freshmen

Principal C. P. Smith announced that Friday will be orientation day at Sherman High School for the incoming freshmen. All eighth graders from surrounding schools planning to attend were asked to register, and will be transported by bus to receive instruction for the next term.

Mrs Mary Virginia O Dell 78 died Monday evening at her son Roberts home Ansted due to a heart attack A lifelong Ansted resident she attended the Baptist Church She was preceded in death by husband Thomas Osborne O Dell She is survived by two sons Robert and Harry both of Ansted four grandchildren and three great grandchildren Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home Chapel Ansted Burial will be in Westlake Cemetery Ansted Body remains at the funeral home.

Woman's Society of Christian Service Meets in Pineville Church

The Pineville group gathered Thursday in Fellowship Hall of the First Methodist Church. Mrs. John B. Thomas led in absence of the president due to illness as officers’ installation plans were postponed. Members listed include Mrs. Mary K. Mrs Eva Rebecca McVey aged 7 of Lansing died Monday evening at Christian Nursing Home Fayetteville after a long illness. Survived by husband Henry and sister Miss Eliza Coleman Graydon. Westmoreland Coal Plans New Mine In Boone County

Whitesville reports J Westmoreland Coal Co will Open a new mine in Boone County about 11 miles up Spruce Laurel with 230 feet underground work. The Hampton Mine Nos 1 2 and 3 remain active as Smith Construction Co won a contract to lay three miles of railroad to be finished by August.

Pineville High School May 22 Commencement Exercise

Sixty two seniors will graduate at Pineville High School on May 22 in the 42nd commencement. Rev. Shirley Donnelly will deliver the principal address The Ingredients of Success with Kenley Hamlin as valedictorian and Marie Burns as salutatorian. Baccalaureate is set for May 19 with Rev. Lafferty Rites Set Wednesday in Matheny

Henderson Lafferty 74 of Matheny will be buried at Oak Grove Cemetery Ravencliff after services at Church of God Matheny conducted by Rev Leonard Churet. He died Monday at his son Benny Lafferty’s home. He was born October 19 1843 in Oceana and survived by two daughters a son six step sons a brother a sister and nine grandchildren. The body remains at Evans Funeral Home.

Building Supply Firm Burns on Mullens Hill

Mullens firefighters were called at 11 30 am Sunday to a blaze at a building supply firm on Mullens Hill owned by D B Nichols and George Thomas. Several hundred feet of lumber and the storage building were destroyed in a fire attributed to defective wiring or a cigaret carried by birds. Loss was estimated at more than 1209 dollars.

Last Rites Set For Rev Akers At Gauley Bridge

Funeral services for Reverend Joseph E. Akers 82 will be held at the Independent Church of God Gauley Bridge with burial in Turley Cemetery near Oak Hill in Montgomery County. The retired Free Will Baptist minister died Monday in a Montgomery hospital after a long illness. Survives include one stepson John Peagall of Parkersburg two stepdaughters Gertrude Pritt Fayetteville and Serena McGuire Akron Ohio. The body will lie in state at Dodd Payne Mortuary Fayetteville and burial will follow at the bier one hour before the service.

Burgess Funeral Slated Thursday

The funeral for Nancy J. Burgess, 90, of Lynco, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Campus Church of God in Cyclone. Burial follows in the family cemetery at Rila. Ex Mount Hope Man J E Bing Dies In Virginia

J E Bing former Mount Hope merchant and longtime civic leader died in a Martinsville Virginia hospital after a stroke. WWI veteran charter member of Mount Hope Lions Club and Masonic Fraternity he directed band in Mount Hope and ran a grocery business for 30 years.
