Miner Rescued After 72 Hours Beneath Donegan Mine

William C. Richmond, 38 year old father of seven, was trapped about 1,600 feet inside the Donegan Coal and Coke Co. mine near Richwood for 74 hours after a slate and coal collapse. He emerged exhausted but uninjured as rescue crews freed him and restored air to the tunnel.

Two Youths Die In Matoaka Police Confrontation

In Matoaka Mercer County two youths from Lashmeet died after a clash with municipal officers at the post office. Police Chief Earl Rose and Patrolman Everett Whitt were injured as they attempted to arrest Bill Cordell for drunkenness. Cordell died from a neck wound and Jerry Mills from a chest wound as shots rang out during the struggle. Burial plans and services are announced for Mills and Cordell.

Four Hurt in Fayetteville Head-On Collision

Four people were treated and released from Oak Hill Hospital after a Sunday afternoon head-on crash on Route 21 two miles north of Fayetteville. Injured were Deanna Sims 17 Gar ren Billy Burgess 16 Fayetteville George Woodyard 17 Clift top and Carl Cutright Fayetteville. Burgess's car veered toward Fayetteville colliding with the truck toward Beckwith driven by Cutright. Investigators said cause is under study. Sims and Woodyard were passengers in Burgess's car.

Local recruit begins three year service after training

A female recruit signs up for three years at the local recruiting station. She accomplies nine weeks of basic training at Fort McClellan Alabama before reporting to Fort Benjamin Harrison Indiana for finance school following completion. This marks a 1956 grade milestone.

Crawford Death Investigated In Pax Area

The death of Lawrence Edward Crawford 6 was investigated by sheriff deputies after his body was found in a Pax Mount Hone area home. Dr M G Hresan cited nasal hemorrhages and estimated death 25 to 35 hours earlier. Graveside rites were held Price Hill Cemetery Oak Hill with memorial to follow.
