Battle Lines Form In Pipeline Fight
Washington lawmakers battle over a Kennedy administration plan to grant eminent domain for coal slurry pipelines. Hearings before the Senate Commerce Committee reveal railroads, labor, and small coal operators opposing the bill citing harm to rail coal freight revenue. Supporters say the plan could cut freight costs and boost coal’s competitiveness. Many lawmakers from coal and rail states weigh political costs in a tight decision. Sen. Warren Magnuson notes rail opposition while indicating many small operators testified against it.
