Gas buildup caused Carmichaels mine blast
The Bureau of Mines attributed the Dec. 6 Carmichaels Pennsylvania explosion at Robena No. 3 mine to methane ignition from accumulated gas during a temporary ventilation interruption. Sparks or an electric arc likely ignited the gas, which gathered in an unventilated face area and moved over equipment as airflow reversed.
