Byrd presses coal use and research funding drive
Senator Byrd has led a persistent push to aid the coal industry since 1952 in the House and 1958 in the Senate. He convened a Washington conference with coal associations, railroads, and United Mine Workers to boost coal use in military facilities and supported adding 1.45 million dollars to the Office of Coal Research for two projects Gasoline and Bootstrap. President Stephen Dunn urged a permanent governors conference to combat competition from foreign residual oil and dumped natural gas, noting rising natural gas prices burden homeowners while pipelines subsidize industrial users.
