The West Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs earned the top national award for its community street lighting program at the GFWC convention. The Mullens Civic Club received a $1,000 savings bond from retiring GFWC president Mrs. E. Lee Ozbirn amid luncheon ceremonies. Holder of a $100 award, Mullens competed in Readers Digest national street lighting contest. Holden and Widen clubs won $50 each. The WVFWC also won a regional citation in the National Women's Crusade for Seat Belts.

Bluefield police arrest fifth officer in burglary ring

Violent Storms Kill Four Across Regions
Violent thunderstorms Sunday and night triggered flash floods, killer lightning, and tornado scares from the Rockies to the Atlantic. The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 1 that daily state sponsored prayers in public schools violate the First Amendment. Morris Plains New Jersey. James Vance Jr. 18 an ex Marine confessed to killing two teenage girls Noreen Buckley 17 and Margaret Ann Kennedy in a lovers lane attack saying a girl called him a liar triggered his rage. He described driving from the Colonial Luncheonette in Morristown to the scene and striking them with a tire iron.
