ADC Extension Sought In Senate
Welfare Commissioner W Bernard Smith says a bill to extend the aid to dependent children program for unemployed fathers may reach the Senate floor next week. About 12,400 West Virginians are on $1 an hour public works jobs under the program set to expire July 1. The House has passed a five year extension, with Smith returning from Washington to press Senators Randolph and Byrd. If federal extension passes, West Virginia could gain about 7 million in matching funds to continue the plan. without it the state may rely on a state funded program. Gov Barron had authority to use state funds to match federal money.
