Farm Bill Fails in Senate Fight Over Grain Controls
Kennedy's bid for sweeping grain production controls collapsed as 48 Democrats defected to defeat the measure. Only Rep. Phil Weaver of Nebraska supported Kennedy. A White House statement blamed GOP chaos for surging farm surpluses and a $1 billion cost next year, while the American Farm Bureau called it a victory for farmers and taxpayers. The bill would have extended planting curbs and price supports to corn, barley, and sorghums, covering over half of last year’s harvested acreage. House Democrats, seeking a narrow margin, kept the chamber in session to amend, but the measure was sent back to the Agriculture Committee by a Republican motion.
