Liquor Control Bill Under Fire
Washington June 21 Charges that the new liquor control bill would make the administrator a czar over the industry were voiced to the house ways and means committee. Morris O. Alprin of New York, counsel for wholesale wine and spirits merchants, and backed by federal alcohol control administrator Joseph H. Choate, argued for changes. The committee amended the bill to create a new control agency under the treasury, a plan Choate and Secretary Morgenthau opposed. Alprin urged allowing liquor manufacturers to be heard before orders suspending or revoking operating permits.
