Douglass Scott, 74, died at his Vale street home at 11 15 this morning after an illness starting Saturday night. He had lived in Beckley since 1912 and was a well known Raleigh county figure. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 PM at the Christian church with burial in Wildwood cemetery. Dr. Ritchie Ware will officiate. pallbearers will be church deacons and elders.

Wade Haley a 55 year old Black laborer is in Raleigh General Hospital with a bullet wound to the right side of the head after a morning shooting at the home of Hugh Banks in East Beckley. Banks, bedfast since January, admitted firing the shot claiming Haley was trying to scald his wife. Haley says he was shot from behind while restraining Mrs Banks from pouring hot coffee on him during an argument. Banks was not arrested pending further investigation.

Men Rescued From Dory After Drift At Sea
Dr Daniel E Nyman a 38 year old Arlington Mass physician and his companion Stanley Matrinas 28 of Cambridge were rescued after drifting three days in a ten foot dory in rough North Atlantic waters. They left Kennebunkport Sunday night and abandoned a 54 foot motorboat after a leak. A coast guard search ended with a Portsmouth fishing party bringing them to hospital in serious and less severe condition respectively.
