Pineville sees three new school buses arrive with a fourth due soon, all part of Wyoming County’s fleet upgrade. The 54 passenger and 8 passenger buses replace older vehicles at a total cost near 18000 dollars. Countywide, 26 buses serve about 3500 of 9200 students, with routes to be announced.
Weiler reports field representative of the United Construction Workers instructed Blake Taxi Company drivers to return to work yet Bud Blake, owner and sole worker, confirms no other employees are at work. The strike began Tuesday over dispatcher favoritism favoring the owner's husband, a fellow driver.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 310 will send 25 to Vanport Oregon district veterans for flood relief and rehabilitation. James P Painter, quartermaster, urged all state posts to donate since many residents are veterans. New members James P Pennington and Carl Barnett were welcomed. The meeting ended with entertainment showing movies.
Julian Arbaugh 29 of Asbury died at Oak Hill Hospital from a cerebral hemorrhage after a two month illness. He operated a bulldozer in Rupert and belonged to the Asbury Methodist Church. Born July 19 1918 in Alderson he is survived by his wife Elizabeth O'Dell Arbaugh and a sister Mrs Joe Yoney. Funeral at Asbury Methodist Church Sunday at 2 pm with Rev L V Martin officiating burial at Asbury Cemetery. Body to be taken to mother in law Mrs Clyde O'Dell's home in Asbury until removal to Tyree Funeral Home. In Fayetteville Gerald Martin attends Camp Horseshoe at Parrsons June 13 to 19. Rotary Club secretary Rosser Long Jr notes the club sponsors Martin for leadership training by YMCA. A correction states the Fayetteville Business Men's Association sponsors Boys State Camp participation, not the Rotary Club.
Elbert Lee Pack of Beckley sues Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company for injuries alleged after being struck by a train on Railroad Avenue in March. Robert J. Ashworth represents the plaintiff. Other suits include David Bair v Amos Collins for 1000 by J Houchinson and Joe Luchini and Curley Allen v Joseph Duntley for 834.74 for goods sold and delivered. attorneys listed.
About 100 Legionnaires from 16 posts in Fayette Monroe Pocahontas Greenbrier and Summers counties attend district convention at 11 am Sunday in Mount Hope Legion hall. Mt Hope post No 103 hosts under Director James A Rowe with district commander election and entertainment by Myron Renick Bert Hall and R L Houchins. A Dutch lunch is planned for 1 pm and a radio show tentatively planned.
Oak Hill Kellis Miller sang with pianist Norma Jean Brooks for Lions Club women at the Hotel Hil winter gathering. About 106 attendees filled a candlelit dinner as E. N. Goole welcomed guests and awarded prizes to several members and friends.
A 60 plus car Nebraska Junior Chamber caravan arrived in Beckley WV after stops in Philadelphia New York and Washington and other cities. They received a warm Beckley greeting with gifts from local merchants and pledges of continued goodwill.
Beckley Red Cross announces summer swim instruction at Waterdale Pool beginning July 6 with daily sessions in the morning for school age children. Adults and beginners will learn basic swimming and lifesaving as part of the Beckley Chapter program supervised by Heber S. Goldsmith Jr and Benita Lewis.
Funeral services for Betty Mae Kinsley 55 are incomplete after she died at home at 4 p m from a cerebral hemorrhage. Born July 1 1892 in Abingdon Virginia she was a longtime Beechwood resident. Survived by husband John eight sons Vernoa Eayl Hunter Dave Harry James Jack Roy of Pasadena one daughter Fay Wayne and Edna and sister Mrs Nancy Minton Sophia.
Gideons announce 50 reservations for the 36th West Virginia Gideon Society Convention to be held June 18 to 20 in Beckley Memorial Building serving as convention headquarters. The program covers evangelical services, sessions, and a Sunday breakfast plus a trip to Alderson Federal Prison for Bible dedication.
Funeral services for 68 year old Mrs Lillie Billon, former Sun resident, who died Wednesday at her Webster Springs home, will be held Sunday at 4:30 p m in a Webster Springs funeral home. Burial follows at Highlawn Memorial Cemetery at 1:30 p m.
Tutwiler noted Consolidated hires remain in town and Amalgamated has a contract since 1935. Pickets at Berkley bus station ceased after a day of action. Drivers claim 12 hour days for eight hours pay and question Amalgamated as a union. Oak Hill cab strike linked to dispatcher bias. UCW representative negotiating with company owners in Oak Hill.
The Trans-Jordan Arab Legion commander in the old city of Jerusalem telephoned Amman to report that the area was peaceful. The message came as authorities noted five light-saving fines were issued in the period.
Delbert Childress of Itmann is held on charges of breaking into Walker Service Station on Guyandotte Avenue and taking a .38 caliber pistol. The weapon was found at his home and he waived to the grand jury. He is held for grand jury action on $5,000 bond. Police also investigate a second entry at J A Peterfish Sales and Service Station on the same avenue.
Mrs William T Daniels was the center of a stork shower in her Oceana home hosted by Mrs Lola Thalsey. Games with prizes went to Mrs Loretta Canterbury and Miss Mabel Short. Refreshments served to a large group of friends and relatives including Mrs Benton Stewart and Mrs C C Daniels.
Judge Ben H. Ashworth signed orders redeeming three delinquent land tracts after owners paid back taxes. Leonard and Gay Webb redeemed six and two acre tracts in Marsh Fork District, Clyde G. Mankin held lot 20 in Colonial Addition Beckley. This week marked the last chance to redeem 1945 taxes from the auditor, with unredeemed land to be certified for sale with proceeds to the state school fund.
Charleston police hunt three of five Charleston men who escaped from Kanawha County jail Saturday using a fork fashioned key. Waiter Estie Mellon said the men were in the kitchen when the break occurred. Two of the escapees are back in custody.
Trent spoke in Beckley with a United Nations guest as Raleigh County backs the International Crusade. The drive aims to supply food clothing and medical care to children in need worldwide. The group targets a $60,009,000 evaluation with no fixed Raleigh County quota yet.
Scalise and Chief Martin reported that multiple calls led to a arrest in a case tied to false alarms. After the 12th alarm a $100 reward was offered for information that would lead to the offender’s arrest and conviction.
