Provisional Italian Leader Touted as Presidential Candidate
14 Trance Bonomi, who led five provisional governments during Italy's wartime status, was suggested as a presidential candidate by supporters who cited his lesser monarchist leanings. The Senate rejected the proposal as senatorial branches near agreement on provisions. The bills ban induction of fathers, cap service at 18 months, and limit Army strength to 1,070,000 by July 1, 1947 while preserving wartime reemployment benefits. Conferees expect little difficulty reconciling differences apart from the teenage provision.

Fire ravages Springfield hotel killing 58 guests
An 11 member guest jury of engineers and experts probed the rapid fire spread from the lobby to upper floors of the Springfield hotel. Fire officials said hundreds of guests were unaware of the blaze until engines arrived about 12:35 a.m. The lower six floors suffered the most damage while upper floors were damaged mainly by smoke and water. Forty eight guests died with 32 among the roughly 200 injured remaining hospitalized. An inquest is set for tomorrow as inquiries widen into alarm response and safety measures. The hotel, built 1908 1909 at about 8 million dollars, was owned by Ernest J Stevens, who later built Chicago's Stevens Hotel. Roy Jeffen said reopening would take months.
