McElroy to seek court order to open Reds books
Ohio Attorney General Mark McElroy plans to ask courts this week to force the Cincinnati Baseball Club to open its financial records to a group of prospective buyers. The Crosley Foundation sold the Reds to William O. DeWitt for 4.625 million on March 23, with a substantial stock stake. The Rippe group countered with a 5.5 million offer, but the foundation says no offer was ever made. The attorney general argues state law requires transparency of charitable trusts, and Theo dore Saker said a Cincinnati appeals court will be asked to compel disclosure, regardless of DeWitt’s pledge to keep the team in Cincinnati or foundation donations to local institutions.
