At Georgetown University’s 163rd commencement Leslie Towns, a.k.a. Bob Hope, was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters for his humor and humanitarian work. Hope, 59, recalled his youth as he noted his son Anthony, 22, graduated with honors. He joked he felt out of place among scholars, likening it to President Kennedy at a medical association meeting.

Max Conrad, the so called flying grandfather from Lock Haven Pennsylvania, arrived in Ireland after completing his 93rd Atlantic crossing in a Piper Comanche. He described the Maine to Newfoundland journey as fairly good despite snow and icing, plans to fly to Cannes, then return to the United States by airliner, and perhaps attempt another solo Atlantic crossing next week.

Domestic Fatality at Sycamore Creek Sparks Murder Charge
A domestic quarrel at Sycamore Creek led to the death of Bobby Lee Pettry, 26, after he allegedly struck his wife Brenda Pettry, 22, who said he threw an iron skillet. She says she shot him with a .22 rifle in a bedroom as he pursued her. Pettry died at Charleston hospital two hours after being shot. Brenda Pettry is held in Raleigh County Jail on murder charges. They were parents of three children aged 2, 4, and 5. their location at the time of the shooting was not released.

In Dorsey Maryland a crash on the Baltimore Washington Expressway left a wounded driver dead at University Hospital. A teenage girl was found in the trunk of a wrecked old convertible with her clothes disarranged. Police identified the occupants as Charles A. Rippert Jr. and Joan Ann ag, both of Allentown. The driver had a loaded rifle on his lap and the girl appeared to have been assaulted with facial injuries.

Approval of a reduction in size of the proposed Honey in the Rock Motel at the intersection of U S 19 and W Va 3 will be sought at a special stockholders meeting June 12 in the Town and Country Restaurant dining room. Unemployment In State Drops By 7.6 Per Cent
West Virginia’s unemployment for April fell to 63 100, or 10 5 percent of a 601 200 labor force, the State Department Employment Security said. Unemployment dropped 7.6 percent from March despite a 6 percent rise in the labor force since March. Employment rose nearly 14 percent from March to April to 538 100. Compared with April 1961, the labor force was down 33 percent, unemployment down about 24 percent, and employment 8.7 percent lower.
