Byrnes Sees US Stand in World Peace Talks
Secretary of State Byrnes asserted the United States will back a two thirds backed conference recommendation if agreed upon by governments, stressing democracy cannot be imposed by force and that those who fought the war must help shape the peace. He urged delegates to freely express state views on treaties and warned against isolation. The Paris peace conference Rules Committee opened meetings to press and debated Evatt’s proposal for equal voice for small nations in treaty writing, with Spaak elected chair and Kardelj named vice chair. Evatt seeks simple majority for recommendations to the Big Four.
