Razing Of House Rekindles Memories Of Old Residents
Beckley faces a major change as the 16 room Neville Street home known as the Old Meadows Place, once home to Governor Clarence Meadows and tied to the Ford and Meadows families, is razed for the $460,000 Beckley National Bank. The historic house, dating to the 1889 to 1893 era, housed several generations, hosted notable figures, and sparked local lore about a hidden log cabin and a past era fading with progress. Joe L. Smith, bank president, notes the project will finish by July 1959.
