Boom Expected as U S Economy Heads to Unprecedented Peak

Frederick Mueller, assistant secretary of commerce, told Milwaukee Rotary Club the United States is on a path to the greatest period of economic activity the world has seen. He cited Commerce Department projections with no guesswork and said demand for goods and services will reach levels making prior peaks in 1994, 1956, and 1957 look small. He did not specify when the boom would start and attacked retailers of “non Sense” for trying to spur an economic tailspin.

Mullens Woman Dies After Heart Attack at Home

Mrs. Nannie Blanch Pauley collapsed and died about 10 pm Monday at her Mullens Hill home. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Wyoming General Hospital. Survivors include her husband Howard and 16 grandchildren. Funeral at Mullens First Baptist Church with burial at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The body to be moved from Robertson and Foglesong Funeral Home. Also notes changes at Beckley Chamber of Commerce and a listing of local park, amusements, and sports schedules.

Property Bond Frees Motorist

A Beckley man, Douglas Ralph Cooper, was released from Raleigh County Jail at 3 a.m. today after posting a $500 property bond for his appearance before Magistrate Cotton White Saturday. He was booked at 8 p.m. Monday on a charge of driving while drunk. Raymond Leonard Burriss and David Allen King, both of Beckley, remain jailed awaiting arraignment on grand larceny charges stemming from the theft of a 1952 model automobile owned by Steward Shuck, Fireco, according to state police.

Fire destroys equipment at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens

A storage garage at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens near Bradley lost about $20,000 in gear. Beckley Fire Department received the call at 12 15 am. A department spokesman said the loss included an air compressor a tractor three power mowers a lowering device and a hand mower. Cause is undetermined and investigators are on scene. Memorial Gardens manager Chester Roberts reported the blaze.

Larry Paul Fudge, 26, condemned for the January brutal murder of Huntington’s Mrs. Inez Booth Sr., awaits the electric chair at the State Penitentiary in Moundsville. Gov. Cecil H. Coal Production Drops In Ohio in Early 1958

Ohio mines produced 7.6 million tons in the first four months of 1958, down from 8.2 million in the previous year’s first quarter. The Ohio Industrial Relations Department reported 1957 output at 37.5 million tons, mining employment at 10,400, and total payroll of 55.8 million dollars, with coal cost at 3.92 dollars per ton, up 3 percent.

Gov Underwood said no extenuating circumstances justify clemency for Larry Paul Fudge sentenced to die at 3 p m. He would keep the case open all day. A psychiatrist said Fudge had an IQ of 117 and he was an honor student. His first legal trouble came in 1952 with a 15 year federal extortion sentence.

Hearing Slated In Auto Crash

Ralph Louis Rowley of Beckley was released on a $130 bond for Beckley Police Court on Thursday night. He faces charges of driving while drunk and destruction of property after a crash on South Payette Street into a telephone pole. Power was not interrupted and the pole was replaced.

New registration in Raleigh County shows 293 Democrats and 70 Republicans over five weeks from late May to June, with two Independents. The books close one month before the Primary. 21-year-olds since last election, precinct moves, and residency rules govern eligibility.

Murder Trial in Raleigh County Ends in Mistrial

A 19 year old Lindy Givens faced a one and a half day murder trial in Raleigh County Court for the Pace killing when juror separation after Monday’s dismissal prompted defense motion for mistrial. Judge McCreery noted the juror, Mrs. Gans, was escorted to her home for medicine, prejudicing the defense. The mistrial was declared and Givens will be retried in the October term. Dallas Moye is scheduled for trial then.

Ex-Mental Patient Kills Two Detectives in Rhode Island

In Pawtucket Rhode Island a 35 year old former mental patient Robert Genereux shot and killed two police detectives Lt. Thomas H. Truesdale and Detective Emil Newberg during a siege after refusing to surrender. Police used machine gun fire and tear gas to storm the house. Genereux was found cowering in a bedroom closet.
