Glasco Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in Mercer Court

Glasco James O. B. Glasco of Bluefield will serve one to five years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the fatal shooting of Mary Colbert at his Bluefield home. First and second degree murder charges were dismissed with credit for 172 days in Mercer County Jail. Other court actions included continuance for Oscar Hampton Turner, dismissals for Tracy Wolfe and Samuel H. Hunt, release of Maude Willis due to ill health, and fines paid by Garland Hodge and Junior Blankenship.

Two New Teachers Added To Concord Faculty

Concord College adds Miss Sargie Stalcup of Dallas as instructor in Business Education and Administration replacing Harry Shaffer for the term. Arthur M. Sanderson joins the English department, to lead journalism classes, after a career in newspapers and teaching in California and Montana.

Powellton Man Receives Bureau of Mines Honor

Austin McLemore, mainline motorman at Powellton No. 6 mine, received a Bureau of Mines certificate of honor for saving fellow worker Robert Hairston after a mine accident. He accompanied Hairston to the hospital and donated blood for a transfusion.

Dr Pantera Feted At Surprise Birthday Party

Oak Hill residents gathered Tuesday night at the home of Dr. George W. Pantera for a surprise birthday party hosted by Mrs. Harold Warden and Mrs. Elsie Neudek. Dr Pantera provided organ entertainment as guests including Mr and Mrs. George Evans Mr and Mrs. George Vasilchak and others attended to honor him.

Inspector Calls Smoking Ban at Cameo Coals Mine

Federal inspector C W Harris urged Cameo Coals to prohibit smoking in the mine and to clear obstructed passages and fix electrical hazards. He noted the mine employed 25 men, produced 209 tons daily, and praised that permissible cap lamps and travelable escape ways were in use while recommending a new flame lamp, an automatic alarm on the ventilator, and posted warnings for abandoned workings.

Ladies' Night Set Thursday at Whitesville Rotary

Whitesville Rotary Club hosts Ladies' Night Thursday at the Sherman High School cafeteria with principal Clifford Coon hosting. The Glee Club directed by George Schweizer provides entertainment. Timber Installation Recommended at Webb Mines

M. E. Hall, a Federal Bureau of Mines inspector, urged permanent timbers at Webb 1 and 2 to improve roof protection. He also advised safe Cardox handling, separate detonator storage, and a timbering plan subject to state approval. Webb Mining Company, with 200 workers, mined about 1240 tons daily. safety upgrades include automatic doors, ventilating controls, warning devices, and rock-dusting near faces.

Dewey Bone Resigns as Concord College Treasurer

Dewey Bone Jr. resigns as treasurer of the Concord College Student Council in Dry Creek to comply with a point system limiting office holding. He is editor of The Concordian and leaves the post after earning seven points, which bars him from other major campus offices.

Ridge to Head Jaycee Committee Finance Chair Named

WHITESVILLE James Ridge will chair the Junior Chamber of Commerce finance committee this year with B L Peters and Rufus Kannon of Charleston as members. An all-state Jaycee meeting is set for January 21 and 22 in Clarksburg with host chapter inviting Jaycees and wives to arrange hotel reservations. The event will feature an awards meeting and a banquet dance. In Van a weekend visit was noted as Miss Davemita Harper of Brandytown visited Miss Helen Cook.

Whitesville Spaghetti Dinner Attends Club Members

The Anchors Boys and Girls Club in Whitesville hosted a spaghetti supper in the club meeting room. Fifty two members from Whitesville and nearby attended the event with Gus Gogus as club leader and Johnny Goggs as assistant. Special services include a Monday January 30 polio prayer service at Bluestone Baptist Church to benefit the March of Dimes. Pineville Woman's Club meets tonight at 8 with Mrs Goodwin Jarvis leading and Miss Frances Bailey performing organ selections.
