Drizzly and damp conditions expected this afternoon with highs near 60 in the southwest and 50s elsewhere. A colder trend moves in tonight with possible snow in the north and drizzle or snow to the south, lows 25 to 35. Saturday remains cloudy and colder with snow possible. Slate Fall Kills Beckley Miner
A Raleigh County coal miner Lester Boyden, 41, Beckley, was crushed to death in a slate fall at Winding Gulf Coal Co. Maben mine at 6 15 a m today. He suffered chest and head injuries and died instantly. Boyden had worked nine years as a helper for a Wilcox miner operator at the mine.

Tornado Rips Through Spring Hill Central Tennessee
A tornado tore a path nearly a mile long through Spring Hill’s business district and nearby homes injuring at least three people. The motel cafe bank and church were destroyed along with many residences and plate glass windows blown out. National Guardsmen guarded sites and civil defense workers assisted as the storm moved on.

Seven Missing In P2V Crash In Kodiak Alaska
A Navy P2V patrol plane with 12 aboard crashed and exploded on Old Woman Mountain near Kodiak Naval Station. Seven men were missing and presumed dead, five survivors were taken to the naval hospital. The bomber, en route from Whidbey Island, touched down on a rain slick runway and skidded before crashing while attempting to regain altitude. About 200 Navy personnel searched the area under floodlights. Names of those aboard were not released.

Purple Heart protester and brother die in Florida motel
Two Greenwich, Connecticut brothers, Jay V. Smith and Roland Smith, ages 37 and 33, were found dead in a Boca Raton motel from self inflicted gunshot wounds. Police say they planned death by own action and used coat hanger triggered devices. Jay Smith became known for hanging his Purple Heart on a White House fence during the Truman era to protest SBA policies. The men had recently sold their Greenwich Humpty-Dumpty Restaurant and arrived in Florida after business troubles.

Olga Hobeck a 57 year old stenographer in a Loop law office says she has cheated on her income tax for 20 years over a grudge against the government. She claims four dependents for withholding though she and her brother Arthur 50 live together in two rooms in a Northside hotel. She estimates she owes about 12900 and says she will pay only if her brother is compensated. She awaits replies from the IRS and senators.
