A Bonanza Utah family of five perished in a house blaze, Hammond Indiana saw four children die, and major fires hit Bradley Hall at Peoria and a Pine Bluff paper mill warehouse. Three more guards fired after Bridwell escape at Moundsville
Three additional Moundsville Penitentiary guards were dismissed after Jerry Lee Bridwell escaped in a trash barrel. Bridwell, captured near Pt. Pleasant, said he rode out of the prison Monday in the barrel and hid in a farm house attic before fleeing toward Huntington. Bridwell, 24, was sentenced to life in Kanawha County in 1961 for kidnapping, beating and raping a 23 year old babysitter.
