An eight man Beartown delegation urged Mullens Chamber of Commerce to back a 13 mile rural road project linking Herntton in Wyoming County to Crumpler in McDowell County via Beartown. They described the current road as impassable in places and noted many Beartown workers travel to Herndon mine and Deerfield operations. The chamber promised aid to pursue the project, stressing regional all weather access and connection of state Routes 10 and 52.
