How to Remove Holiday Stains From Fabrics and Wood

West Virginia University Home Economics Specialists advise methods for treating common holiday stains on furniture and linens. Heat marks on varnished wood respond to camphor spirits, or oil and salt if needed. white water marks respond to polish and warm pressure, or paste made from oil and nonabrasive powder. Burn spots require removing char, sanding, staining, and lacquering with white shellac, then polishing. Candle wax on linens is removed by pressing with blotters and a warm iron, then using a grease solvent or a denatured alcohol solution for color stains. white cottons may be bleached.
