Christmas business in Beckley ranged from terrific to very good and generally surpassed 1961 levels. Tan Mann Hall of the Tan Caen reported his best fall since 1957 while December was very good. Organ sales rose alongside pianos and instruments. Beckley Hardware noted quality-conscious customers and a strong season. Toyland on New Raleigh Road did exceptionally well, especially electric trains, and space agencies sold out. Eppys Dragon Valley Drive saw sales about 20 percent above last year, with transistor radios and electric hair dryers top sellers. The E M Payne Co. posted a 15 percent December gain.

Nuclear detonations reported over Christmas by AEC
The Atomic Energy Commission said the Soviet Union fired a number of nuclear devices during December 23 to 25. The bus owner and his driver orchestrated the raid, firing machine pistols wounded only by a glass splinter. Four Charged in Charleston Whisky Raids
Four persons were charged with liquor violations in Christmas Eve raids by Kanawha County sheriff's deputies on four Charleston establishments. More than 200 bottles of wine and liquor were seized.
