President Plans Gettysburg Stay

NEW YORK The Daily Worker, longtime voice of communism, reportedly will cease next Tuesday after a secret vote by the Communist party National Executive Committee. Editor John Gates disputes the move and says the Daily Worker will end only when it decides to. The paper has suffered declining circulation and financial losses, with 5,574 paid readers in the last year and a prior peak near 20,000 in 1938.

McDowell Fire Claims Fourth Victim in Rock House Hollow
A McDowell County blaze on December 16 killed nine year old Linda Watkins, raising the death toll to four. Linda died at the hospital after her home burned at Rock House Hollow six miles north of Kimball. Linda’s father Francis Watkins, 35, and her 11 year old sister Frances were also killed, while a visitor Clarence Roark, about 25, died in the fire. Mrs Watkins and two other children remained hospitalized in serious condition though eight year old Zenna and Elsie, seven, were to be discharged this week.
