Lt. Lowell W. Roberts and Sgt. Henry Sours of the Virginia National Guard volunteered to bring a surplus Army light reconnaissance helicopter from Tucson. The trip took six days, longer than expected, as they followed highways searching for gas stations due to the helicopter's small fuel tank. They averaged about 20 miles per hour against headwinds at times and strapped two five-gallon gasoline cans to the helicopter after buying them.
