Junior Editors Quiz on Landmarks

A cairn is a pile of stones used by man as a land mark. Man has been leaving landmarks ever since he began roaming from place to place. Usually, he made a cairn because there were almost always stones within easy reach. These landmarks were first used to mark a route. Later men used them to mark places where great events had taken place, and to mark graves. When they began claiming land for their own, or for their governments, cairns were used to mark boundaries or to signify that the land had been claimed. There are stone cairns in the British Isles which were made by people who lived there long ago. Very little is known about these people. It is believed that the cairns were used as monuments to the dead and as memorials of events. Today cairns are still used sometimes by surveyors to mark boundaries. For you to do: Try making a small cairn of stones in your yard. Use small stones, but make sure you put them together carefully so the cairn will be solid. The ten dollar award goes to Ronny Lundquist of Grand Rapids Michigan. Mail your question on a postcard to Junior Editor Box 1325 Beckley.
