SAN FRANCISCO AP The National Council of Churches the nations largest Christian body says the United States may soon have to subordinate its will to the United Nations Delegates from 33 Protestant and Orthodox denominations urged U S support for strengthening the world body as a peace instrument The assembly hailed the UNs growth from 51 to about 100 members saying democracy will extend world processes but may outvote the United States Citizens should prepare for such possibility and view democracy on a world scale with both benefits and risks.

Cuban church bombing blamed on Reds in Havana

In Havana Church officials blame Communists for a bomb at Our Lady of Charity after vesper services. No injuries among 50 inside, but pews and flooring damaged. West Virginia real estate post filled by Underwood appointee

Fred S. Peterson of Parkersburg, president of a local real estate firm, is named to the West Virginia Real Estate Commission by Gov. Underwood for a term ending April 30, 1964. He replaces Ben Grant Jr., also of Parkersburg, who failed confirmation by the State Senate at the recent special session.

West Virginia Weather Forecast Turns Colder With Snow

Cloudy and colder with light snow or flurries for the north tonight and Thursday. Extended forecast shows temperatures about eight degrees below normal lows and highs across the state with a quarter inch of precipitation mainly over the weekend. Walter Lee Humphrey, 220 Lo cust Drive, is the new Beckley City Recorder after unanimous City Council vote. He succeeds the late J. Smith who died last month, with a $6,000 yearly salary and start date to be announced. Humphrey works for Home Insurance Co. and has 35 years as a coal industry accountant. he is a registered Democrat active in church affairs.

West Virginia Retail Association Outlines Reorg Plan

Plans for reorganization of the West Virginia Retail Association were outlined to Beckley merchants at a January 5 meeting. John E. Hopkins Jr. of the American Retail Federation described a Charleston base as a state clearinghouse with full time staff to lobby state and federal governments on retail issues and to educate the public about retailing. The federation represents 40 state and 30 national groups, and Beckley had 223 retailers with $36 million in 1958 sales, paying $400 in dues in 1959.

The State Tax Study Commission recommends major changes to West Virginia gross sales tax and related measures. Proposals include cutting natural gas production rate to 5 per 100 with removal of a 5,000 exemption, raising manufacturing rate to 50 cents, lowering contracting rate to 1.50 per 100, reducing large industrial energy sales tax to 50 cents, and moving telephone and telegraph firms to the gross sales tax at 4 percent. The commission also flags income tax options such as a payroll withholding plan or a personal income tax with graduated rates.
