A Mullens area incident centers on a young woman found twice lying on highways near Mullens and later in Welch Emergency Hospital. Police say she has given multiple names Blanche Hendricks Irene Hendricks Grace Palmer and appears alternately clear headed and intoxicated while being treated for mouth hemorrhages and injuries.

Mullens miner Archie Branch of the Stephen son mine with Buckeye Coal and Coke Company received 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to drunkenness and to assaulting his wife Beulah and his seven year old stepson. He was fined 25 dollars plus costs for the child assault and 10 dollars plus costs for the wife assault and 10 dollars plus 30 days for drunkenness. Neighbors and police tracked Branch after he fled during arrest and finally captured him in a neighbor’s home.

Two men, Elmore Miller 43 Mullens and William Dawkins 58 Co vel, arrested by state police and federal agents near Mullens for moonshine possession. They waived preliminary hearing before U S Commissioner Henry Bernard at Welch and were released on $500 bond to appear before the January federal grand jury.
