Knox Appeal Urges Saving the Supreme Court at Rally
Col Frank Knox told Republican leaders in Charleston that saving the Supreme Court is the central issue for the next national election. He called the court the last refuge of individual rights and attacked social security and Guiney coal stabilization as administration moves against the court. He warned that loss of the court would end constitutional protections and urged farmers' concerns to guide the GOP at the national convention.

Amendments Down On Guffey Coal Bill In House Vote
Washington August 17 amendments rained down on the Guffey coal bill but Democrats pushed the measure through the preliminary storm and set a final house vote for Monday. The bill creates a presidentially appointed national coal commission to enforce codes on wages and hours with a 90 percent drawback for compliant producers and a 15 percent tax on coal value. An amendment by Mitchell aimed at banning hiring relatives was adopted 67 to 26 amid low floor attendance. Mapes’s bid to exempt workers from civil service rules failed as Democrats opposed it.
