Fayette County Spelling Bee crowns district champs

The final district spelling bee held in Fayette County named Leon Franklin of Page as 5 6 champion and Patricia Ann Buchanan of Montgomery with Jean Frances Miller of Beards Fork as 7 8 division champion. Roy Stewart of Powellton was runner-up in 5 6 while Eddie Randall Jr. and Leslie Daniel Young led the 7 8 field. Additional participants included students from Kingston Deepiver Mulberry Romont and Ansted with judges Irene Graves Bertha Washington Eva Thompson.

Rock Fall Kills Greenbrier Man at Bellburn Mine

Alvin Austin Loudermilk 36 of Charmco died when rock fell at F. L. Coal Co. mine in Bellburn around 1 30 p m Tuesday. About two tons of rock covered him as fellow workers and volunteers recovered the body by 7 15 p m. A co worker Jimmy Wheeler injured his leg but not seriously. Surviving are wife Betty two daughters Janet and Debra his parents Mr and Mrs Richard Loudermilk of Maxwelton and two brothers Lloyd and Earl of Charmco. The body lies at Nickell Funeral Home with arrangements incomplete.

Men's ROTC Glee Club to Perform in Mount Hope

The Men's ROTC Glee Club of West Virginia State College will perform at Mount Hope Auditorium on Sunday under Les Volontiers Club sponsorship. The concert features classical, calypso, and Negro spirituals with Dr. P. Ahmed Williams directing. The program includes Eurydice pieces, Schubert, Yon, and pieces by Hairston and Rergier, highlighting singing, speaking, and military precision.

Death Ruled Accidental Inquest At Ansted

An inquest at Thomas Funeral Home in Ansted ruled Hebal Berry’s death an accidental drowning after his body was recovered from New River. Berry’s fishing companion’s death received the same verdict as an autopsy report awaited in Charlestown. Coroner W B Mallins and Deputy Sheriff Bernard Johnson presided, with J Zane Summerfield presenting the autopsy findings.

Coal Mountain Spelling Winners Advance to District Bee

Coal Mountain spellers led by Timmie Walls and Glenna Hatfield will compete in the district spelling bee at Baileysville Elementary School. Runners-up are Jerry Addison and Nancy Moore. The Wyoming County Bee is May 3 with Tri-County finals May 9-10 in Beckley, sponsored by The Register and county principal associations.
