The Rev. Leon C. Atwell of Oklahoma City will be guest minister for revival services from May 1 to 10 at the Jones Avenue Church of God in Oak Hill. Strong local faith leaders, congregations, and area worshippers are expected to attend each evening.
About 1,000 Methodist youth from Huntington and across the region attend the West Virginia Methodist Youth Fellowship convocation in Huntington. Three Sylvester youths from First Church Sylvester are among delegates. Rev. Cox leads, with Dr. A Dudley Ward and Dr. Lacy Burns as featured speakers. Activities include worship, dramatizations, discussions, and district rallies in Beckley with youth fund pledges and officer elections.
The Rev. E. W. Lambert announced daily worship at 7:30 p.m. Each service features special music by the church choir directed by Earl Mullins.
When five Hungarian refugees arrived in Whitehorse Yukon Territory the post noted the frigid welcome. The editor quipped that escaping Hungary might have led them to Siberia, and he was unsure about their Siberian hopes.
Whitesville Rebekah Lodge picks three members for Elkview convention. Delegates are Minnie Thompson replacing Ellen Vickers, Selma Stover, and Marie Kelly. Noble Grand Gloria Dickens cannot attend due to illness.
Oak Hill Women of the Moose Chapter 33 will host Hospital Chapter Night on May 8 at the Moose Lodge with Mrs. Raymond Paykus as program chair. The event includes an open house for members and guests and a covered dish dinner. Fifteen members met at the Moose home to plan the forthcoming meeting.
The Rev. E. W. Lambert of Jones Ave Church of God and five Oak Hill youths travel to Anderson College Theological Seminary in Indiana for a vocational training session. Returning home this weekend are Steve Smith Clarice Weeks Ancel Jeffers Aubrey Duncan and Max Nichols.
Mount Hope High School band will be led by nine majorettes at the All County Band Festival in Fayetteville. Head majorette Priscilla Melespie leads a group including Janet Jones Barbara Bennett Judy Bojlea Patty Perdue Patsy Brown Lanet Parish Anna Falgo and Barbara Ferri.
The Public Service Commission will hear two West Virginia water company cases next week. Switzer Water Co. of Logan will report May 3 on purchasing facilities for a new treatment plant. Residents of Sivilzer village seek an adequate supply after outages and low pressure affecting 40 of 247 customers between 2 and 4 a.m. Guyan Utilities Co. of Corinne, Wyoming County, must appear to answer complaints of inadequate and interrupted service, discolored water, offensive odor, and frequent electric bill nonpayment prompting pump power cuts.
Mullens West Virginia Easter ceremony at 11 a m united Twila Frances Rinehart and William Lewis Wilson with Rev J R Rinehart officiating. The bride wore a blue dress and white accessories. The groom is from Bluefield and the couple will reside in Bud. Burial for Henry H. Jones 76 of Scarbro will be in Greenwood Memorial Park. Survivors include his widow Matlie Jones and one stepson Edward Sims. Kopperston class held a covered dish dinner and square dance class at Kopperston School Gymnasium.
Oak Hill senior Nancy Kay Walton has been elected as attendant in West Virginia Wesleyan College's 1957 May Day court. The event runs May 3 and 4 with coronation, sorority and fraternity singing, a mesnic and May dance. Walton is an honor student majoring in religious education and active in Alpha Omicron Alpha Gamma Delta and campus groups.
The Band Boosters Club will run a concession stand in Memorial Auditorium for visiting bands during the Fayette County Band Festival on Friday and Saturday. The stand opens at 10 am for lunch and stays open during breaks, selling sandwiches cupcakes chips candy and doughnuts with proceeds benefiting the local band.
Dorothy Elementary selects James Ray Miller and Jacquetta Hudson as this year’s king and queen. Crowning planned Monday night by Dorothy PTA with student classmate voters choosing the honor.
Miss Ann Haynes visiting parents in Fayetteville from Manasquan New Jersey spent Easter with her family. Other locals welcomed relatives and students from West Virginia University University of Virginia Hampden Sydney College and Greenbrier College over the holiday. The Tonys hosted guests from Appalachia Charleston Columbus Ohio and Niagara Falls during the weekend.
Charleston attorney Jackson Savage said he will defend Charles (Tiz) Jones, evangelist of the Nazarene Church, charged with attempted burglary in Kanawha County. Jones is to be tried May 10 in Charleston on a Kanawha County Grand Jury indictment. he has a prior conviction for breaking and entering and a 1 to 15 year sentence in the State Penitentiary. He is free on a $3,000 bond while appealing and faces an additional breaking and entering charge from a Summers County Grand Jury in May.
Oceana Grade School PTA elected Art Yost of Lynee as president succeeding Les Lively. Rachel Cozort was chosen ice president and Erdene Short secretary. The group discussed the Big Top TV Act circus at the grade school gym with two performances at 2 pm and 7 30 pm, admission 30 cents.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rider and daughter Linda returned from a visit with relatives in Oriskany Virginia. Mrs Betty Chaffins and Miss Mary Whisenant of Charleston were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs H W Whisenant. Dr G Shannon and Worley Walker spent Sunday in Claytor Lake Virginia. Mr and Mrs Harold Smith and their four children of Chillicothe Ohio spent the Easter weekend with her mother Mrs Jennie Canterbury.
The wedding of Mrs. Jewell Groce Taylor and Charles Holland occurred at Trinity Methodist Church in Maysville with the double ring ceremony at 4 p.m. on April 21 officiated by Rev. Carl E. Vogel. The bride wore pale blue silk shantung and carried a small white Bible with an orchid. reception followed at the bride’s home. The couple will reside in Whitesville after a wedding trip to New Orleans.
Graveside services were held for infant twins Tresea Bell Ramsey and Robert Richard Ramsey, children of Robert S. and Norma Reed Ramsey, who died in Mullens hospital. Surviving grandparents are Mrs. Vannie Ramsey of Garwood and Mr. and Mrs. Lige Reed of Garwood. Services were conducted at Lena Cemetery near Hernon.
Mrs. Fred Kennedy of Glen Jean honored her daughter Bunny with a Monday party at the Scout Cabin Oak Hill for her birthday. Hosts included Mrs. Kennedy and assistants Anna Oxendale Laura Miller and Fanny Jones. Guests danced and refreshments were served to a long list of local residents.
Oceana Rebekah Lodge No. 61 and Dan Gunnee Lodge sponsor a ham dinner at Oceana High School for the Past Grand Association District 16 meeting. Dinner runs 5 to 8 pm with a youth dance 8 to 11 pm. proceeds go to Laurel Valley Recreation Project.
A schedule announced by G F Brown Wyoming County vaccination technician lists dog vaccination clinics to meet a June 1 deadline under state law. Fees are $1.50 per animal with clinics from April 27 to May 27 at multiple locations including Pineville Keyrock Rockview Marianna Wyoming Wolfpen New Richmond Skin Fork Turkey Creek Aldrich Fork and Fort Branch School on Indian Creek.
Mt View PTA held a 7 p.m. meeting with President Titia Parolani appointing a nominating committee. A May benefit dinner and a 7:30 p.m. May 7 variety show at the school were announced to aid the Mt View Band. The Ray Howell Fund received $264.46 from contributors.
Tremor struck the Turkish village of Fethiye in Muğla province on Thursday killing at least seven people and injuring about 70. Officials say about 60 percent of the 6,000 residents' buildings were destroyed as stone and plaster homes collapsed and survivors rushed into the streets.
Griggsville Illinois fair offers 25 000 dollar bills at 89 cents each for one hour daily over five days starting June 30. Customers may buy unlimited dollars but one at a time with a new line after each purchase. Officials say sale proves at least one genuine bargain in 1957.
