Turnpike seeks bids from West Virginia firms
West Virginia firms may gain more contracts on the 88 mile Charleston Beckley Princeton super highway. The State Turnpike Commission authorized contact with state contractors to gauge interest in smaller bidding jobs, citing only five or six WV companies bidding on 40 percent of grading work to date. The plan to break big contracts into smaller bids could delay progress by about five weeks. The panel noted broader WV bidding could cut overall costs. In other action, the panel moved to condemn right of way near Marmet Hospital in Kanawha County within about 40 feet of the rear. The hospital board rejected a full $125,000 option sale and opposed relocating to South Charleston. A hospital spokesman commented, I don’t know where to go from here.
