Safe in Sea After Storm Sinks Freight Vessel
A 35 man crew of the 441 foot freighter Marine Merchant abandoned ship in the Gulf of Maine during a nightlong storm. They were hoisted aboard two commercial vessels, SS Esso Raleigh and Daru, at dawn after enduring sea wreckage and crashing waves. Jerry Lee Bridwell, 22, of Charleston, was sentenced to life in prison for rape. Kanawha County Judge William J. Thompson imposed the term after Bridwell pleaded guilty to attacking Cuba Lee Duff, 23, last December. Bridwell forced his way into Duff’s home while she baby sat, dragged her to his home, beat and raped her, police said. Mental tests showed he is sane.

City annexes Lambert Addition in Beckley
In Raleigh County Circuit Court Judge Robert M. Worrell signed an order bringing the Lambert Addition into Beckley after noon today. The ~five acre subdivision developed by Carl Lambert will gain city fire and police protection, with three city employees involved in the annexation. A three foot strip between Lambert and McLean Additions was also annexed and a road access agreement called for a freeze line to restrict development. Mayor Cecil L. Miller said the move aligns with the city’s view that areas contiguous to the limits should join the city.
