Adolf Eichmann lost the first round in his bid to avoid the gallows. Three Israeli judges found them competent to try the former Nazi SS colonel on 15 counts of persecution deportation and mass murder of Jews. Eichmann pleaded innocent as the trial began in Jerusalem.
United Press International reports Cuban revolutionaries launched a nighttime assault by air and sea on Cuba near Cochinos bay south of Matanzas, clashing with Fidel Castro forces. Parachute drops and beachhead fighting followed as radio networks linked to Havana, gunboats fired offshore, and rebel leaders claimed a homeland liberation campaign.
In Jerusalem, Israeli chief prosecutor Gideon Hausner said Adolf Eichmann beat to death a Jewish boy in Budapest for stealing fruit from a peach tree in Eichmanns Budapest yard. Hausner asserted the court has certain knowledge of the killing.
Presiding Judge Moshe Landau rejected a defense challenge to court jurisdiction claiming Israeli judges could be swayed by Nazi terror. He asserted Jews are bound to overcome such fears and noted the judges are experienced and the defense counsel seasoned. The court also ruled Eichmann’s kidnapping by Israeli agents irrelevant to the case.
A spring snowstorm swept the Midwest causing up to 15 inches of snow in Duluth and paralyzing transit. Dozens of highways closed and long distance air and ground traffic halted in Chicago. At least 30 deaths were reported, including 14 motorists and six members of a Madisonville family. Winds hit 50 mph as cold air moved south, bringing rain and scattered snow to the Northeast.
West Virginia forecast cool and partly cloudy through Thursday with light snow flurries in the north. Five day highs lag normal by 5 to 8 degrees in the north and 7 to 43 in the south, with rainfall Friday or Saturday totaling 0.25 to 0.5 inch. Beckley and Oak Hill reports show low 30s to mid 40s, river conditions Greenbrier river muddy, Lake muddy, gauge 4.2 ft.
Roy Lee Harmon quits the West Virginia Legislature amid a bitter salvo against Raleigh County Democratic leaders. He blasts ex-senator Jack Nuckols and UMWA head George Titler, accuses them of rotten politics, and vows to oppose Nuckols' Senate seat in 1962. Harmon moves to Wayne County News as managing editor.
London reports Britain consults United States on Russia's Laos peace proposals. Russia sent its reply to the British plan backed by the United States. The plan urges a ceasefire first then negotiations, while the Foreign Office says the Soviet plan is ambiguous and no conclusions have been reached yet.
The former president says the Soviet man in space achievement came from concentrating on the spectacular and congrats them. A State Department official calls Laos cease-fire reply by the Communists as jockeying for position and possibly a stall. Clark says Kennedy school aid bill would not be tied to private school amendments and expects a veto if such asks arise. UPI reports a pro-Communist rebel force, aided by heavy artillery, breached royal army lines to seize Nhommarath in central Laos. The strike threatens to split the kingdom, placing rebels within about 30 miles of Thakhek as Royal Army regroups near a mountain pass. U.S. -built T6 trainers conducted air missions from Savannakhet.
Cincinnati police use an artist sketch of a suspect in the death of James Cunningham and his wife Goldie in a murder robbery case. The couple, both found at home with chest wounds and signs of struggle, had $3000 missing from a metal box. A wanted broadcast searched for a young man seen near the home.
President Kennedy planned to urge Congress to create a Cabinet rank Department of Urban Affairs to oversee housing and transportation issues for Americans. The proposal envisions folding the Housing and Home Finance Agency into the new department to address mass transit in metropolitan areas.
MOSCOW UP I Yuri Gagarin the first cosmonaut was awarded a large apartment in a Moscow housing development in gratitude for his historic space flight last Wednesday. His family began moving from their suburban home to the new flat on a Moscow boulevard as they arranged furniture and belongings.
Charleston UPI report says state liquor store employees will receive their delayed monthly pay by Tuesday due to high turnover. Paychecks were originally due Saturday the 15th but will now be issued to all staff.
Elizabeth Taylor, making her first public appearance since a near fatal pneumonia, is the sentimental favorite to win最佳 actress at the 33rd Academy Awards in Santa Monica. The event, televised on ABC, features Greer Garson and others as nominees with Bob Hope hosting.
London dispatch reports worsening relations between Communist China and the Soviet Union. Sources say ideological rift deepens since Moscow’s November manifesto compromise vanished, leaving bloc parties in a standstill though both sides seek limited political ties for mutual benefit.

A survey to gauge whether West Virginia plants can handle production of missile or aviation components started in Huntington. North American Aviation, Los Angeles, will send two officials over two weeks to survey all parts of the state with no plan to locate a new plant in West Virginia at present.

Secretary of State Dean Rusk stated that the anti Castro invasion of Cuba was not staged from American soil. He said the United States is sympathetic with the aims of the participants but will not use armed intervention and believes Cuba's fate should be decided by Cubans. He hedged on further steps.
President Kennedy returned to the White House this morning after a weekend at Glen Ora Virginia for a busy day of foreign policy. He arrived by helicopter at 9 05 am EST to review the latest Cuba invasion reports and the Soviet response to Britain s call for a Laotian cease fire.
