Pvt. John A. Bennett, 24, a Negro soldier, was hanged at Fort Leavenworth at 12:05 am for the 1954 rape and attempted murder of an 11 year old Austrian girl. Convicted at a Salzburg court martial on February 8, 1955, he had awaited execution since April 20, 1955. Eisenhower affirmed the sentence after appeals failed.
