The No 1 Otsego Mine in Wyoming County is permanently closed by Brule Smokeless Coal Co affecting about 400 miners. Most workers will transfer to the newer No 4 mine across the mountain as development continues. The closure stems from prohibitive mining costs in seam Poe 3. No 3 opened in 1945 introduced trackless haulage, while No 4 uses mine cars and track haulage. Total payroll at both mines was 260 before closing. about 200 tons per day will be lost, though faster development at No 4 may offset this.

Satisfactory Condition Reported For Fellowship Trip
Approximately 15 members of the junior youth fellowship of the Oceana Methodist Church hiked to Ship Rock on Sunday. They lunch and return to Laird Memorial Hospital in Montgomery where a member underwent amputation of the left leg due to complications of diabetes. The surgery was performed Monday morning. In Fayette Circuit Court this morning the case against James Arthur Vance of Fayetteville was dismissed upon motion of the state for attempting to kill Seldon Linkous Beckley.
