Eleven State Miners Die In March
Charleston reports coal mining caused most industrial fatalities in March. The State Workmen's Compensation Commission lists 14 total deaths that month, 11 in coal mining, with other fatalities in road work, hotels, bakeries, restaurants, and excavation. Non fatal industrial accidents reached 3,157, down from 4,015 in March 1960.

Local Veteran of War With Spain Dies at 87
Dr James Lawrence Merrylees, 87, veteran of the Spanish American War, died at 2:30 am at Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital after years of poor health. A Mullens Advocate editor and Beckley Post-Herald court reporter, he was born Sept 9 1873 in Philadelphia and moved to West Virginia in 1907. He valued Civil War history, dentistry, and later enjoyed Talking Books for the blind. He belonged to St Stephen's Church and was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Chrysler Motors Sued Over Dealer Franchise Ties
The Justice Department filed a civil antitrust action in Ft Wayne Indiana accusing Chrysler Motors Corp and parent Chrysler of pressuring Studebaker-Packard dealers to drop competing franchises in violation of the Sherman Act. Chrysler sold 1,147,001 units in 1960, about ten times Studebaker-Packards 105,958. Nearly a third of Studebaker-Packard dealers also sell other makes including Chrysler products.

Store owner fires during attempted hold up at Sand Lick
Luther Jones, 76, owner of Luther Jones General Merchandise, shot Andrew Wood during a Thursday night armed robbery at his Sand Lick store. Wood, masked and armed with a .22, was wounded in the head and taken to Beckley VA Hospital in serious condition. Police later arrested Wood after he drove his car to Trap Hill High School. If he recovers, he faces a charge of attempted armed robbery.

Plane Crash Kills Minister and Family in WV
