Big March Jobs Gain Cuts U.S. Unemployment

The March report shows unemployment fall by 387,000 to 4,362,000 and employment rise by 1,106,000 to 63,828,000, marking the largest February to March drop since 1950 and the biggest rise since 1951, with the seasonally adjusted jobless rate dropping from 6.1% to 5.8%. Parkersburg and Logan led a busy West Virginia election day with Logan seeking a fifth term for Mayor Litz McGuire amid opposition support for Rev. John R. Browning. Logan County, AP report from Logan says coal miner James Fouch of Garrett's Fork was killed when rock fell at the W. & E. Coal Co. mine on Mill Creek. Survivor Paul L. Ball, injured with a back wound, warned a coworker to run but the man headed the wrong way and died.

Coal Operators Await Meeting With Underwood

Gov. Underwood will meet next week with four small coal operators associations in Charleston to discuss their objections to the United Mine Workers contract. More than 20,000 small operators’ employees may lose jobs if payrolls cannot meet the new terms. The groups seek a compromise and urged state leaders to aid a joint effort with the union.

MacArthur Woman On Trial In Ritz Shooting Case

Betty J. Rice of Mac Arthur faces felonious wounding charges in Raleigh County Court over a November 23 1958 shooting at The Ritz Mabscott Hill. Prosecutor Sparacino says Rice fired at four attackers after defending her brother while defense argues Rice fired to scare off assailants and may have only struck the ground. $1 476 Collected For Cancer Fund in Raleigh County

Funds for the 1959 Crusade for Cancer in Raleigh County rose by 1476.51 after a Monday bank deposit following a house to house canvass in Beckley and surrounding areas. Treasurer Mrs John Ward said many workers had not finished canvassing and some could not deliver to the Moose Club tally site. Areas still to report include Crab Orchard and Mabscott. The center’s operation is at risk without the drive. Letters went to 12 000 county residents and contributions total 909.65 to date.

Susan Hayward and David Niven won the Academy Awards for acting, sharing top honors with the film Gigi which captured best picture and nine nominations. Burl Ives and Wendy Hiller won supporting acting awards. the broadcast featured many stars and was notably brief.

Supreme Court Asked To Void Leeber Ouster From Board

Counsel for A P Leeber petitions the Supreme Court to overturn a Raleigh County circuit court order removing Leeber from the Raleigh County Board of Education for voting to hire his wife as a teacher. The prior order, later set aside, removed Leeber and Covey for approving the superintendent’s employment list including their wives. Covey resigned, but Leeber faced a renewed removal ruling last month.
