Pioneer Road Contractor Dies at 87 in Mullens

Franklin Provinzano, a pioneer Wyoming County road builder and former mine worker, died about 5 a.m. at his Mullens residence at 87. Italian native who founded Middletown, he built roads linking Wyoming to Raleigh County and extending from Stephenson to Herndon via Basin, later worked 32 years at East Gulf mine. Survived by wife Pauline and five children, services at St. John’s Mullens, burial Sunset Memorial Park Beckley. Body at Robertson and Foglesong Funeral Home.

Crab Orchard Driver Ordered to Appear in Court

Donald W. Shirkey of Crab Orchard 21 was ordered to appear in Beckley Police Court after a 11 05 p m Sunday stop for invalid registration no license and no registration card. Robert Junior Downing 32 of Beckley cited at 12 15 a m today for speeding and ordered to appear in City Police Court tonight.

West Virginia Weather Forecast Overview East Frost Tonight

Clear with scattered frost mainly in the east. Tonight lows around the 30s in the west and near 40s in the east. Tuesday warms with more clouds and a chance of showers by night. Extended outlook shows near normal temps in the north around 50 and south near 52, with warm days Tuesday and Wednesday and a cool spell midweek. Showers total about 0.1 to 0.2 inch Tuesday night. Beckley highs around 68 to 73, Oak Hill around 41 to 52, river conditions include normal Greenbrier stage and muddy Bluestone Reservoir with five gates open.

Gratifying Dip In Unemployment Hint by Ike

President Eisenhower hinted unemployment for the month ending March 15 showed a gratifying decline after a White House meeting with Labor Secretary Mitchell. Press Secretary Hagerty said the official figures due Tuesday would be "pretty good" and of great interest to Americans, with February's unemployment at 4,749,000, up 25,000 from January.

Graham Attracts Crowd of 17 000 at Wellington Meeting

In cloudy chilly weather about 17000 attended evangelist Billy Graham at Athletic Park Wellington. Fifteen hundred made decisions for Christ as organizers ran out of lit erature. Notables included two Cabinet ministers and Archbishop Reginald Owen. Graham left quickly after the service and was reported unwell. Prime Minister Walter Nash and about 45000 others attended the opening rally Sunday night.

Driver Charged In Road Mishap Near Mullens

Itmann man Richard A. Marsh was cited for reckless driving after a pickup sideswiped a car between South Mullens and Itmann. The Lillys of Rhodell owned the damaged vehicle valued at about $500. Marsh reportedly left the scene and did not attend a scheduled hearing.

Soviet Says U S Out To Wreck Talks In Berlin Air Corridor

In Moscow the Soviet Union accused the United States of deliberately violating altitude rules in the West Berlin air corridor to wreck upcoming East West talks. US officials denied intent, noting a C130 flew at 20 000 feet. The note claimed Washington aimed to hamper negotiators in Geneva starting May 11. The US argued there is no legal ceiling in the corridor and that planes may fly at high levels to supply allies. The Soviets warned they reserve air space above 10 000 feet for jet patrols. Door To Door Drive Seeks Cancer Funds in Raleigh County

A Raleigh County drive led by the Woman's Club gathers donations to raise 10000 for cancer research and treatment. Beckley Ministers Hear Fire Chief Otis Lyons

Beckley Fire Chief Otis Lyons spoke at the Beckley Ministerial Association meeting in the Beckley Presbyterian Church. He outlined resuscitation methods for smoke or carbon monoxide victims. The group endorsed National Library Week and named Rev. W. M. Freeman to attend the United Fund meeting on April 13. The ministers also thanked taxi owner Ray Farrow for providing free Easter Sunday church transport.

Jury To Decide Amount Of Money In Suit Verdict

In Raleigh County Circuit Court the jury will determine the monetary award in a suit by Todd's Grocery and Hardware Inc. against Chauncey and Mary Woods of Woods Coal Co Lanark. The plaintiffs seek 367 dollars but the case, appealed from a justice court, must stay at 300 dollars. Todd testified about renting a bulldozer to the Woods for mining work and a smaller machine getting stuck in mud. Defendants' counsel argued 80 dollars already paid covers the work, leaving 80 as the appropriate payment after deducting time for pulling the stuck machine.

New Robot With Television Eyes Unveiled at Nuclear Congress

In Cleveland at the fifth Nuclear Congress Hughes Aircraft Co. unveiled the Robot Mark I mobot with forklift like chassis and TV cameras. Dr John W Clark of Hughes Culver City described it as a first of a new family of remote control handling machines for hot labs and nuclear research with potential in ocean and moon sampling missions. Also featured was a nuclear heat conversion generator built for the Atomic Energy Commission by the Martin Co.

Korean Boy Wounded in Army Fallout

The U S 8th Army says three American soldiers were held after a fight with two Koreans left a four year old boy wounded. Suspects Sgt Edward S Haskins Specialist 4 Thomas Singleton and Cpl William A McCoy are identified with hometowns Freeman West Virginia Sumter South Carolina and Milwaukee Wisconsin. The child was treated and released at a military dispensary.

Kidnaped Boy Slaying Triggers Milwauke e Area Manhunt

A 6 year old boy Ben Wagner was kidnapped on the way to a store and found stabbed to death in a roadside ditch near Grafton Wisconsin. The autopsy showed five stab wounds and no sexual molestation. Father Louis Wagner identified the boy as his son. A playmate reported a stranger luring Ben into a car. Witness Milton Geiger said he chased a car with a waving boy inside but lost it on a side road.

John W Evans Dies While Florida Vacation

John W. Evans, 205 Fairview Ave., died Sunday in West Palm Beach while vacationing with his family. The body will be returned to Beckley Tuesday evening. funeral arrangements are incomplete. Evans, co owner of Ward Evans Motor Co., was born in Soulsville, Wyoming County. He moved to Raleigh County in 1903 and attended local schools. Survivors include his wife Cora L Snyder and a daughter and son, Mrs Elouise Crook and John W Evans Jr., both of Beckley. He was active in transportation and auto business, organizing Gulf Transportation Co., now part of Consolidated Bus Lines, and Bluefield Beckley Transit Co., now a subsidiary of Atlantic Greyhound Lines. He also worked with Beckley Auto Wrecking Co. and previously supervised transportation for the Raleigh County Board of Education for five years. The family is en route to Beckley.

Pax Man Injured In 60-Foot Fall

John Guy Brunk, 4 Pax, fell sixty feet from a cliff onto the West Virginia Turnpike. He is in critical condition at Beckley Hospital after being spotted by a motorist near Milepost 54 and rushed from Melton Mortuary. Authorities say he appeared to have fallen before daybreak and was found at daylight.

Mock Pleads Guilty In Raleigh Court Jail Term

George Mock Jr. pleaded guilty in Raleigh County Criminal Court to an attempt to commit a felony after being charged with three counts of breaking and entering. He was sentenced to two months in the county jail for breaking into the Pagoda Shopping Center and stealing electric razors and watches.
