Gov W W Barron opened a state wide cleanup drive with a brief address at the Raleigh County Courthouse at 11 am praising Raleigh County for blazing a trail to new frontiers. He lauded local leadership, urged civic pride, and said West Virginia’s improvement depends on self developed pride and tourism potential, urging strong support for the campaign.
Governor Bar ron lauded Woodrow Wilson High School Band calling it one of the best in West Virginia. He spoke to Raleigh County leaders then traveled with his party to Appalachian Bible Institute in Brad ley for lunch with opening ceremonies at 1 30 p m. Continued on page 2.
A Communist Chinese threat to send troops into Laos raises the specter of a Korean style war unless major powers reach a diplomatic solution. Chen Yi warned SEATO would expand the civil war if it intervenes, while Western officials look for clarity after discord over Laos between Moscow and Washington. President Kennedy and Prime Minister Macmillan planned talks in Washington to push for a cease-fire and negotiations.
Charleston reports the state treasurer will open bids April 12 for one million dollars in West Virginia road bonds under the 1920 good roads amendment. Morgantown notes a Wheeling man, Arthur M Recht, named editor in chief of the West Virginia Law Review. Also in Morgantown, Dr Robert J Marshall of Mayo Clinic named to WVU medical faculty. White Sulphur Springs reports five arrested in raids on four night clubs near town facing liquor charges. two others pled guilty and fined 200 dollars each after raids by a 16 man police team.
In Columbus Georgia a car train collision killed Sst Theodore Barker 34 Huntington West Virginia his wife Dixie 30 and their two daughters instantly. Their other daughter Cynthia 3 died later in hospital.

In Kinver England Joe Jordan aged 83 and Alice 77 marked their long marriage by sleeping apart after their wedding reception. Since 1953 the couple has refused to share a home, each staying in their own house while maintaining a life together. She says she would like to live with him but age and choice keep them separate, a unique arrangement that endures.
Former Benicia mayor Mike Fitzgerald vows to oppose government plans to relocate the Benicia arsenal, which employs about 2,400 of the town’s 6,000 residents, recalling a 13 year old order reversal and promising renewed resistance. Joe Jordan, 83, remarks on his long marriage with Alice Jordan, noting happiness in their arrangement despite others' nerves. A Los Angeles bandit apologizes after stealing $158 and kissing cashier Irene Bacca. In London, a Duke of Rutland spokesman says carnival attractions won’t be used to draw visitors to Belvoir Castle, preferring the fairground side be handled by others.
Police hunt four burglars who, amid tear gas, stole about 200000 in gold and diamonds from H R Terryberry Co in Grand Rapids. Eight safes opened over hours. 300 gold sheets and unknown silver sheets taken. Co owner warns exact loss may take weeks to determine.
President Kennedy will visit Paris for three days from May 31 to June 2 with Jacqueline Kennedy. The trip follows talks with Charles de Gaulle on Laos and comes as Macmillan plans meetings in Washington. Adenauer may invite Kennedy to West Germany, marking his first foreign trip since taking office.
Secretary of State Joe Burdett heads a committee to find more floor space for new and expanded state offices including the Department of Commerce, the income tax department, and a restructured Natural Resources Agency. In Santiago Chile two people died and 96 were injured when a fire caused a panic at the Astor Theater late Sunday. A 63 year old woman and a 12 year old boy were among the dead.
In Hamilton New York Mrs Robert Linsley a quick thinking mother saved her 4 year old daughter Barbara from a 24 foot well. Barbara fell into seven feet of water during an Easter outing and was kept alive for 20 minutes by the mother who climbed into the shaft and held her head above water until firefighters arrived. Barbara had been taught to hold her breath guiding her to a rock near the surface and was rescued with ropes two miles from home. The father is a Colgate University professor.
Charleston dispatch reports Supt. William E. Burchett announcing five State Police transfers and one promotion. Trooper R. M. Hall promoted to corporal in charge of the Montgomery detachment. Troopers Jack Milam and R. L. Casey moved from the Turnpike Detachment to Company iB at South Charleston. Troopers H. W. Lambert and W. C. Hersman moved to the Turnpike from Madison and Montgomery.
The Census Bureau reports women outliving men in the United States with 97 men per 100 women last year, down from 99 to 100 in 1950. It also notes 9.1 million women aged 65 or older versus 7.5 million men in the same age group.
In Denver a Roman Catholic priest, Msgr. Delisle Le mieux, shot and killed a burglar during an attempted theft of church Easter funds at St. Catherines. Police say another intruder may have been wounded as the priest wrestled for his shotgun.
WVU plans to award an honorary doctor of letters to President John F. Kennedy at its 92nd commencement on June 5. Kennedy will deliver the address, adding to honorary degrees from Notre Dame Tufts Harvard and others. Gov. W. W. Barron will receive an honorary doctor of law and introduce the President.
A Sunday fire in a frame dwelling in Saginaw Michigan killed five children of Mrs Delores Johnson including 8 year old Debra Kay The case echoes a prior conviction for cruel punishment against Mrs Johnson tied to Debra Kay in a separate incident four years earlier The report notes other national items including a murder case in Los Angeles and two airliner emergency landings in Boston and Montreal
The unfinished section of South Oakwood Avenue part of Rt 16 relocation awaits dry conditions.
