In Laos near Vientiane, Soviet paratroops dropped north of Vang Vieng and 20 miles behind Royal forces. Gen. Phoumi Nosavan says 360 troops, six miles from Vang Vieng, threaten the northward advance and risk ending cease-fire hopes as reinforcements rush to defend Muong Kassy and the Plain of Jars region.

Raleigh Real Estate Co. acquires Homeseekers stakes

Raleigh Real Estate Co. Inc. bought 100 percent of Homeseekers Land and Building Co. in a rumored half million dollar deal. Assets include Bus Terminal Beckley Supermarket properties on Prince Street Beckley Lincoln Mercury on South Oakwood Ave Sunset Cemetery and other holdings. Final negotiations completed this morning with stock largely acquired from O F Cook R L Trump estate Nellie Trump and Mrs J E Craft. Real estate in Fayette County transferred to two Bowling Halstead owned firms. Homeseekers Oak Hill Inc and Bowlin gs Inc operate Fayette County properties as of April 1. Cook and Dennis Terry will stay with the organization Songer named president and GM Cook VP Mason treasurer and Ashworth secretary. Songer will run his independent insurance business not part of Raleigh Real Estate. Mason a CPA has offices in the Raleigh County Bank Building. Sunset Mausoleum Inc a new venture by Mason Sanger and others plans a mausoleum in Sunset Cemetery with construction expected within a year.

State Department urges Cuba to sever ties with communism

The United States published a 36 page pamphlet urging Fidel Castro to sever links with the international communist movement. It expressed confidence the Cuban people will seek a free Cuba, while avoiding commitment to backing a democratic movement before it becomes government. The document frames Cuba as being steered toward becoming a Soviet satellite.

Postal Clerk Held For Embezzlement

Huntington area report says Kenova postal clerk Jack W. Honacher 34 faces grand jury action on embezzlement charges involving contributions mailed to the Wayne County Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Bond set at 500 dollars. he also faced a drunk driving charge after arrest by Huntington police, with two society envelopes found in his possession.

Cuba Plans Protest Over U S Seizure Attempt On Western Union

The Cuban government planned to protest the U S Navy action blocking its attempt to seize the cable schooner Western Union off Baracoa claiming a flagrant breach of international treaties. The ship was reportedly 7 or 8 miles offshore beyond the 3 mile limit. The Swiss embassy said Castro asked it to deliver a note to Washington. The destroyer John W Weeks was involved in the incident.

Tshombe orders Katanga mobilization after UN action

Katanga President Moise Tshombe ordered mobilization of the province after UN troops arrested a Katangese unit at Luano Air Field and barred Katanga traffic. A decree warned residents against aiding the UN with fines up to 2000 dollars and up to five years' imprisonment. UN and Katanga agreed on a joint guard over the field.

Cowboy Crooner Cooley Under Suspicion in Wife Death

Don Spade Cooley, 50, famed cowboy singer, faces murder suspicion after police allege his wife Ella Mae Cooley, 37, was beaten to death at their Willow Springs home. He was to be booked in Bakersfield after two hours of questioning. Ella Mae, mother of two, died near Tehachapi Hospital. coroner said death occurred four to five hours earlier.

17 Year Old Jailed After Death by Own Action

A 17 year old Glen Morgan girl back in Raleigh County Jail after a suicide attempt Monday night. She drank from a paint thinner jar during a jail visit and was treated at Raleigh General Hospital before returning to custody. Previously arrested in mid March for auto theft, she waived preliminary hearing and was placed on probation with a plan to move to Ohio with her mother. Judge McCreery may reassign jurisdiction to Criminal Court after the latest incident.

Beating Four Yanks In Frankfurt Involved Soviet Colonel

Four American soldiers aged 18 to 20 from the 8th Armored Division were said to have pulled a Soviet lieutenant colonel from his Soviet mission car in Frankfurt Easter Sunday night and punched him several times. Military police detained the youths for questioning as U.S. and Soviet authorities prepared a joint statement on the incident.

Kelly Says State Auditing Outdated and Inefficient

State Treasurer John H. Kelly called for broad modernization of auditing and accounting systems in state government. He criticized overlapping procedures, noted that the auditor’s office has never been audited, and said coordination with State Auditor Denzil Gainer could improve efficiency.
